Product Description

Italian war drama directed by Roberto Rossellini. When three Allied POWs escape from their camp and hide out in Rome, they are given shelter by a beautiful young woman. Now that they finally have something tangible to fight over, the three prisoners' national chauvinism (one is Russian, one English and one American) simmers to boiling point.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Italian ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.66:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: In keeping with his previous film Generale Della Rovere, filmmaker Robert Rossellini pursues a wartime theme in his 145-minute "personal epic" Era Notte a Roma. The story concerns three Allied POWS, who escape from their camp and hide out in Rome. The trio is given shelter by a beautiful young woman. With something tangible to fight over, the three prisoners' national chauvinism (one is Russian, one English, one American) simmers to a boil. For reasons which remain obscure, Era Notte a Roma was never given a widespread American release. ...It Was Night in Rome ( Les Évadés de la nuit ) ( Era notte a Roma )

3.0 out of 5 stars tense wartime story of courage and resilience 20 July 2011
By Philoctetes TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
A nun who isn't really a nun finds herself saddled with three escaped pows, one limey, one yank and one russky, and forced to hide them in her Rome attic as best she can. She has some help from her beau and a doctor with links to the resistance, but with so many neighbours and fascists everywhere, how long can they last? Will the allies get to Rome in time?

An easier film than Rome, Open City, but also less iconic. I saw it because it was written up as a sort of love rectangle, with the three men each trying to win the beautiful Espiria. It's nothing like that. The lady's fortitude and generosity preclude any indulgence of their basic instincts; instead they all share a fellowship which is more important in wartime.

It's a bit long and the early difficulties where there are three languages and no words in common are perhaps too realistically presented, but it's worth seeing. This is the optimistic counterpart to the earlier film.
