If anyone has bought "Fates", you must buy "Equilibrium"! Mongrain's work is pushing the boundaries of music and the guitar once again. His unique feel and compositions are a portrayal of his knowledge, experience, frustration, questions, answers and opinions, analysed through his genius 2nd album. Enigmatic and strong, this is a revolutionary album. This sounds like a voice of his message and understanding of his art.
A true and innovative acoustic master using altered tunings, percussive sounds, tapping, harmonics, melody, odd signatures, classical finger picking, independent rhythms and fusion feels. Every song is magnificent and titles like "Silent fool" or "Pandora's box", swept me away by his grace and imagination. If you understand his perception of each song, you understand how these songs are very intense and huge. He plays whats needed to create the desired effect. He does not keep it nostalgic or just randomly play a cacophony of notes to suit all those "widdly widdly" listeners!
I find it an equally nourished album to his first album "Fates". A great feature of this album, is that you are able to see the different tunings for each of his songs which is a fantastic bonus to experimental guitarists or musicians.
Guest appearances include Michael Mannering on this album which was a nice collaboration.
Buy this for yourself to see what the hype is all about. With great players like Dufour or Mckee out there, in my opinion, Erik is a notch above these players!

I bough this after seeing some of his stuff on youtube, watching him play is really interesting but just listening to the cd I got bored after a couple of tracks, His tapping style, which is fascinating when you watch him play, is pretty restrictive for his songwriting.

Erik is an acoustic guitar genius - I've played this about a gazillion times since I got it a couple of weeks ago. I'd really like to see him playing live (he's got a few videos on his YouTube channel).

The fretless bass (Michael Manring) on a few of the tracks is absolutely divine, too.

Gifted Canadian Guitarist 27 July 2011
By Steve Vrana - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Canadian guitarist Erik Mongrain has released two albums for the Prophase label. EQUILIBRIUM is his second. I stumbled upon this uniquely gifted musician in a YouTube video. While the two-hand tapping technique was not originated by Mongrain, he uses it to marvelous effect on these nine instrumentals.

The inclusion of Michael Manring on fretless bass on two tracks ("Alone in the Mist" and "Maelstrom") is a logical pairing. Manring toured and recorded extensively with Michael Hedges, an obvious major influence on Mongrain.

In the liner notes, Mongrain provides a brief comment about each song. Of the opening track, he writes: "I have a hyperactive mind. There is no switch to turn it off. One thought leading to another, it never ends..." That's as good of a description I can think of to describe his music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Running time - 40:27]

In Erik's second album one notices strong influences of the likes of Michael Hedges. Nicely done!! I'm looking foreward to this third...

No one plays the guitar the way Erik Mongrain does. He is a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and percussion player all at once. Not only is he a virtuoso at this playing style, but the music that he writes is beautiful, interesting and extremely well constructed. There are so many brilliant, subtle touches to how he brings the music forth that it's absolutely mind-blowing that he does all at once with the level of skill that he does. The recording quality on this album is also top-notch. There is a clever and understated use of stereo mic'ing that gives the recorded sound a depth that almost makes you feel as if you're standing in front of him as he plays. I highly recommend this album.
