Manufacturer's Description

Reproducing an image, exactly as you saw it, has always been a challenge. Until now, with the introduction of the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, the bar has once again been raised and the realm of what's possible has been expanded.Engineered for the most discriminating professionals, the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 comes with a variety of technological breakthroughs that will make it the benchmark by which all other 17-inch printers are measured. In fact, there's so much innovation in this feature-rich printer, you might expect a much larger footprint, but the 3880 is remarkably compact, equal in size to many 13-inch printers.

Epson R3880 3 Dec 2010
I found this printer easy to set up. It is great to have decent size ink cartridges that do not run out after every few prints. The print quality is excellent, I do some lecturing and I have repeatedly been asked what printer I am using as the quality is good. Good blacks in mono work. I am very happy with this printer. Possibly a bit noisy - only minor downside.

I'd used an Epson Stylus Color 3000 for some years (an earlier version of Epson A2 printer). When everything went right, it produced superb results for a printer of that era. The 3880 improves on it in most respects - physically smaller when all folded up, much improved interface that reduces the tendency to print landscape on portrait paper and vice versa, better colours and resolution, and borderless printing. Photo printing on Epson paper gives probably the best results that you're going to get from an inkjet. Photo printing on plain paper is poor, but that's not what this printer is made for (HP printers probably do best on plain paper). The use of separate black inks for different paper types can be expensive - the printer wastes a lot of ink changing black cartridges, so it's best to stick to one type of paper unless you have a particular reason to change. Epson printers also have a reputation (which my 3000 lived up to) of suffering from head blockages. The 3880 hasn't had this problem yet, but it has fixed heads like the 3000, so may do eventually. However, if your priority is print quality for photos on photo paper, you won't beat this printer. I would strongly recommend using Epson paper with the printer - I've had disappointing results on other papers, and I would also recommend only using Epson inks (no, I don't work for them) to avoid head blockages.

First of all, well done Richard Frankfurt for a great delivery service! I've previously had Epson 1290 and Epson 1400 dye ink printers so this was my first pigment ink printer. For an A2 printer it's reasonably compact, although this is a bonus as the main reason I went for the 3880 over the R2880 or the new R3000 was the cost of ink. It's easy to set up and, after priming the ink channels, the first prints came out very quickly . . . both in the set up and speed of printing. I'm just using specific icc profiles and the printer control at the moment and both work well. I have mostly used Ilford Galerie papers over the years and have started with the Smooth Pearl, Smooth Gloss and Gold Fibre Silk papers. The prints on all three papers are better than anything I've got in the past, both colour and especially B&W (I had concerns of printing on gloss paper with pigment ink but I've been pleased with the results). The Gold Fibre Silk prints are really nice and as close to wet chemistry photographic feel that I've seen. I've only printed about 50 prints so far so the real test of this printer comes later but I'd thoroughly recommend the Epson 3880 in terms of quality and for anyone who prints any significant quantity of prints.
