EPSON Stylus PHOTO R800 = AMAZING, 25 Feb 2006
This review is from: Epson Stylus R800 Inkjet Colour Photo Printer (Electronics)
An amazing printer... and great value for money.
Very solidly made, build quality is well above all other inkjets I've owned or used. Easy to install, quick, smooth and very quiet in operation.
Photo print quality, colours and finish on Premium Glossy Paper are extraordinary. Gloss optimiser and photo-black cartridges get rid of that horrible variable gloss finish common on other Epson & other brand printer output = magic. Output is indistiguishable from lab photo prints. General document printing quality and speed are also excellent.
If you want a high-end, quality A4 inkjet printer for photo and general printing I can thoroughly recommend this little gem!!!

Mixed Bag - a flawed genius!, 11 Nov 2008
This review is from: Epson Stylus R800 Inkjet Colour Photo Printer (Electronics)
Brilliant when new and when nozzles don't get blocked. So it reviews well in mags , as they only have it running for a few days.
Truly excellent print quality for a year or so. I was SO impressed when it was new.
And then it gets a bit older... blocked nozzles... and, boy, it drinks more than a thirsty elephant.
So, as an example, this is what happened today...
The R800 informs me my Magenta cartridge is empty.
I insert a new one and it then uses so much ink cleaning that I now also have to replace Red, Matte Back, Cyan , Blue and Yellow. Sixty quids worth!!
I put in the new Epson Cartridges and press the button and it does it's stuff.
A test print shows blocked nozzles. I clean, test, clean, test... SIX times!!
Still nozzles blocked, still more cleaning, still more wasted ink.
More wasted money. More money into Epson's Bank Account.
So, of those NEW espensive cartridges, the Ink level gauge now shows Magenta:50% , Cyan:50% , Matte-Black:75% , Red:75% and Blue:75%.
(That's probably a tenners-worth of ink absorbed in a soggy sponge inside the printer)
DISGUSTING - and the nozzles are STILL blocked!!!
So, I still couldn't print a photo if I'd tried. It would be cheaper to take a Taxi to Boots to get something printed.
You'll be impressed when its new, but quite honestly, after 15 months just switch it OFF and throw your money down the drain.. it's quicker.
In future I shall buy a printer where the nozzles are in the cartridge.
SUMMARY:- Forget it. It's not a cheap printer to buy and darned costly to run.
Post Script: Another couple of cleans and there goes the Gloss Optimiser.
Choose another brand. My previous Epson was nearly as greedy and I didn't believe the 'private' reviews. Waste of money.

The best print output I've ever seen!, 20 Mar 2004
This review is from: Epson Stylus R800 Inkjet Colour Photo Printer (Electronics)
I am very much into digital photography, and wanted to be able to produce prints with the same clarity as those produced in traditional photography. I had been using an Epson Sylus Photo 890 for some time, and whilst that produced very good output, some graininess was still evident, and as with all other printers I've seen, the finish on gloss photos is uneven on certain colours, and there is a tendency for colours to change with time - especially when picutres are on display.
So I recently splashed out on the Epson R800 - and have to say that the output is truly stunning! Crystal clear print with no hint of graininess, fantastic colours, and also a consistent gloss finish due to the inclusion of a 'gloss optimizer' cartridge, which finishes off each gloss print with an even and protective gloss coating. Another plus point is that Epson claims a 75-year colourfastness of the prints - a huge improvement on most prints and photographs! It also has the facility to print directly onto CDs, using a special CD holder.
The only downside I can see is the price of the ink cartridges - although I guess that this is the case for just about all printers. The printer takes 8 seperate cartridges - 5 colour, two different blacks, and the gloss optimizer - and a full set of cartridges currently cost around £90! I haven't been using mine long enough to comment on how long the cartridges last, but the output is so good that I will try to overlook the ink prices - and am delighted with my purchase.
