Bought this printer for working from home. Scanner is excellent generating jpeg images of documents or pictures. Printer chews ink cartriges initially and models since Feb 07 have been designed by Epson not to work with generic cartridges.
At least one supplier now claims to have cracked the problem.testing it out.
Note - ALL of the colour cartridges must contain ink for the printer to work - even in black and white.

Quality of print (text or picture) is good - rate of printing is slow.

Probably a good option for someone not printing much and needing a good scanner. Acts nicely as a stand alone ( if slow) colour photocopier. If the latest generic ink cartridges turn out to work with the latest printer then it will have been a reasonable value purchase.

I am overall happy with this printer, but if you want even just a black and white page printed, it seems to take far longer than my last printer (also an Epson) I haven't printed that much yet (maybe 30 pages !?), but the black ink is indicating low already.

The good thing is that you can buy separate inks and get them on line far cheaper than the epson ones.

I would always recommend epson, my last one lasted 8 years and only broke down after being dropped !

As this printer was relatively cheap, I wasn't expecting too much. Being a student I wanted something cheap, but of a fair standard. This product exceeded that by far.

The software takes a while to load, even on newer computers, but whn you see the volume of programmes offfered to you with this product you can see why. The print quality on paper is excellent, and on photo paper almost perfect.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting a bit more than your average printer. Although beware that no USB cable is included and you will need to purchase one of these separately (you will need a USB 2.0 Lead [AtoB])

Epson has been quietly introducing technology to prevent the use of compatible ink cartridges in its printers, and recent models of this one will not work with inexpensive replacements. Given the very high price, low capacity, and despite what they say, ordinary enough performance of their own inks this is a rip off. It will cost you hundreds of pounds more over the lifetime of a printer than one that will take cheap compatibles, yet Epson is not honest enough to admit this. I've used Epson for many years. Not any more.

12 months ago I purchased a Canon Pixma Printer, Scanner, Copier on the basis of it being a Canon, and reading various reviews. How wrong could I have been. It drank ink, which was only available from Canon at extortionate prices, and it's performance can only be described as mediocre.

What a difference this Epson DX 4000 is! Small, compact, good to look at, has 4 seperate colour and black cartidges, (replacements for which are available on-line at very competitive prices), is very quiet, and produces excellent quality prints.

Considering it's price, it is doing an excellent job.

One warning however! Whilst the software is loading, go away, cook a meal, watch a feature film, or have a long weekend! It takes an age.

I have had a number of printers, all epson, which were cheap and cheerful and have all gone wrong at some stage. I don't know why I plumped for another one but I'm glad I did. It was easy to install and use. The print quality is excellent for a printer of this price and it does exactly what it says on the box, in other words, the durabrite ink stays on the surface of the paper giving you a vibrant print on even the cheapest paper. The photo-copier has been invaluable and has been used even more than the printer function in recent weeks. I have used the scanner to scan photos and email them to relatives and the resulting prints have been as good as the originals. I would definately recommend this product to anyone after an all-in-one printer. It has proved to be very good value for money.

WARNING: If you want the DX4000 to last long please make sure you change your ink cartridge STRAIGHT AWAY!!!! before the ink cartridges run out. Otherwise the the dried ink will block the print head...and you will end up like me, having to purchase another printer.

Apart from that, it is a fantastic printer!!!!

GOOD POINTS

Cheap printer, ink lasts long, ink is very cheap price , good quality prints, very quick printing, does'nt make too much noise, small, handy scanner and copier.

BAD POINTS

No usb cable, but i had one from my previous printer

Sotware takes over 20 minutes to install but it has loads of good programmes.

Overall i would highly reccomend it to other people.

GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY!!!

This is my third Epson printer in eight years though I have used Epson printers for twenty-odd years at work.

My first was a Stylus Colour 740 which died after four years hard use printing photos ... The second was a Stylus Photo 830 which along with my Canon scanner is now in use with another member of the family ... I decided to go for an All-in-One system with Scanner / Copier / Printer and this DX4000 was at the bottom end of the price range ... I use non-Epson inks for cost effectiveness as the ink content is about three times the quantity of the Epson cartridges ... Epson inks are very good but a bit expensive never-the-less if you are doing a lot of photo printing ... I have tested the DX4000 over the last few days and I find it to be very quiet when compared to my other printer experiences ... Full A4 photo printing at the second highest quality on glossy paper took 5 minutes and 15 seconds and gave excellent quality prints ... Two 13 by 18cm prints on an A4 glossy took 5 minutes and four 9 X 13 also took 5 minutes ... I am very happy with the quality of the photo printing even though I have not tried the highest quality yet ... My last Epson printer had a colour cartridge containing five colours of ink and obviously had to be changed when one of the colours went low ... The DX4000 has the advantage that a single colour cartridge can be changed which is much more cost-effective ... For £50 , I don't think that there is another All-in-One that can beat this one and by using non-Epson inks it makes this a very economical photo printer ... The Scanner and the Copier also work great on Monochrome and on Colour ... I can't think of anything bad to say about the DX4000 at this price ... It is obviously built to a price as it is very plasticky ...
