Unlike it's predecessors ( 2 HP's and a lexmark) it was up and running in about 20 minutes including unpacking. Even better, if I forget to switch it on
It connects to to router within a few seconds and I don't end up with a foul up in the print spooler, it just prints.

Scans are PC based rather than printer based (as was my Lexmark) though I prefer this, it won't suit everyone. Double sided scanning is a real boon as is double sided printing (though I had that before anyway).

Neat footprint, holds a ream of paper, separate ink cartridges and quiet as a mouse. It doesn't shake the desk either!

Just two gripes; the slide out tray to catch printed sheets is a bit flimsy and would benefit from a finger hole to flip up the last section (bit petty really) and the draft print quality is unreadable and therefore useless. EPSON please note. If it put just 10% more on the paper in this setting it would be worthwhile. I'd really like a custom setting so that I could get the density exactly as I need it.

Draft print quality is my only reason for 4 stars. Would have been 5 otherwise.

I was for many years a fan of HP printers but I got fed up buying expensive tricolour cartridges every time one colour ran out. The move to Epson was to benefit from the separate cartridges, and in this respect the printer is great. Buying a fairly expensive, high spec, multifunction printer I expected a lot; with hindsight possibly too much.
PRINTING: Print quality is as expected. Printer copes well with 2 sided prints. Print menu gives a good range of options and is easy to use. However, if you routinely use 2-sided you need to select it every time, otherwise it reverts to single-sided.
SCANNING: The scanner can take some time to warm up (both software and hardware) but once it is going it runs along fine. For a multi-function printer there is a good range of file formats, options to add pages and delete/rotate pages before saving, although not as versatile as a fully dedicated scanner. The ADF (automatic document feeder) works well on the whole with options to scan single-sided, double-sided or from the platform. However, I have had a number of document jams already, even when new, and the pages are often a bit tilted in the scan, although usually acceptable for my needs. I fear as the machine ages the jams will get more frequent.
COPYING: The copier function works fine with options for single or double sided coping.
FAX: The printer can be linked in series with my telephone/answer-machine (i.e. you connect the phone line to the printer and then connect the printer line output to the telephone). This seems to avoid the clash between fax and answer-machine that I had on the old multi-function printer. However, the downside is that when I am on the phone the printer moves into send/receive mode.

I brought this printer nearly a year ago. I read the reviews (generally very good) and wanted this kind of spec. The key thing for me was that it was wireless. Duplexing, colour, etc. were all required but if the wireless was a problem, then there was no point in getting this printer. Its quite a large item (which I knew in advance) and the wireless would allow me to put it downstairs, out of view and send print jobs to it no problem. The printer arrived and has and indeed does work. But the problem is that for unexplained reasons, a high number of print jobs will fail. I think you can all see that being a flaw with any printer!

It's not the wireless signal strength, as the same job will sometimes print and sometimes not. Its not a computer end issue (as we have the same variable results from 4 different computers). I ended up moving the printer back upstairs, across the room from the computers and am still having problems. Of course there are things I can do about this to try and sort out the problems and I have/will do so - the list is endless. But the bottom line is (at least in my mind) when one buys a printer that has a key selling point as being wireless, it should print and do so over a wireless connection. Not unreasonable is it? In my book it should also do that out the box if you're attempting to do so with a standard set up (standard computers (Windows 7), home network, not over large distances or a poor wireless environment, etc.). But this printer fails on all levels.

When it does print, it's reasonable good (although preview quality is very poor i.e. not really readable for text - so much for saving on ink using that feature). It's pretty noisy and goes through ink pretty fast - but those are known qualities from some simple online searching.

Replaces a high spec HP Officejet duplex/ethernet.

Superior in all material respects - quicker, quieter, cheaper, improved UI, more compatible, better looking, smaller footprint, far less quirky, better paper handling, excellent print quality (for an inkjet), really easy to set up, multi-cartridge, low energy etc..

Recommended.
