I am digitalising a photographic archive and a large number of the prints are larger that A4 size. Also some have been mounted on card and have been kept in damp conditions and have become up to a quarter of an inch from being flat.
Having contacted Epson's support team and found the GT-20000 did all the things I wanted, e.g. the lid can be removed for scanning pictures on large presentation cards, etc. and I have used Epson scanners for more than 20 years and found them one of the best on the market I ordered one from Amazon. The scanner was actually supplied by LambdaTek ComponentShop who promised delivery in 5 to 7 working days. However, it arrived the following day!
Set up was simple on an iMac. Run the software, plug it in and scan directly into Photoshop CS4 or Photoshop Elements. For some bizarre reason Photoshop CS5 doesn't install scanner drivers straight off.
In use the scan quality is as good as any scanner I have used and the lack of flatness of the images is no problem, but the most impressive thing is the speed. A full 16" X 12" black and white print is scanned at 600 dpi (the maximum optical resolution) in less than a minute. (File size about 38Mb) This compares with the 6 minutes, or so, that whole plate glass negatives (remember them?) that my Epson V750 takes at 1200 dpi. (File size about 75Mb)
If you have images up to A3 size to scan I would thoroughly recommend this scanner for its quality, speed and ease of use. It's not too heavy either.
