Epson EH–TW480

Great Value, HD-ready Projector

This is the perfect projector for gamers, sports fans or film buffs who want to have the benefits of going big, but at an affordable price. The Epson EH-TW480 delivers really rich colours and sharp images, so you can see every detail and create a home cinema experience that will be the envy of your friends.

You can project larger than 300 inches, big enough to have all your friends round to watch a film, enjoy the footie or play games against each other on the big screen.

This projector delivers a 3,000:1 ratio and has a White and Colour Light Output of up to 2,800 lumens, which means that when you’re playing video games, watching films or cheering on your sports team during the day, you no longer have to sit in the dark to see properly.

Easy to Use

Getting started is as simple as 1-2-3. You can have the projector set-up in a few easy steps. It even has a manual horizontal slider and automatic vertical keystone correction. This means you can project at any angle – the projector does not need to be straight in front of the screen. Clever technology lets you align the picture with a few button presses.

You can connect to your television, Blu-ray, DVD, PC or games console. Specifically for gamers, there is a video game colour mode, which greatly enhances gameplay and enjoyment.

If you have holiday snaps on a USB memory stick, you can simply plug this into the projector card reader and create your own slideshow – much better than friends and family crowding round your PC trying to see.

On the Move

If you have holiday snaps on a USB memory stick, you can simply plug this into the projector card reader and create your own slideshow – much better than friends and family crowding round your PC trying to see.

It also comes with a 1.8-metre power cable, a remote control with batteries, and an easy-to-follow set-up guide.

Peace of Mind

Gamers, film enthusiasts and sports fans can enjoy HD–ready content much longer with the lamp’s long 5,000–hour lifespan and two–year warranty.

Digital Projector Colour Light Output (CLO)

Digital Projector Colour Light Output (CLO)

Epson had a bright idea -- measure the the colour light output (CLO) instead of just the white. High CLO means colours are up to 3 times brighter than 1-chip DLP projectors, meaning you don’t need to worry about your presentation displaying dark, dull images -- with an Epson projector you’ll get maximum impact.

Colour is an important part of image quality, which is why a projector’s colour brightness, given in lumens, is important to know. If it’s not as high as the white brightness, images are duller and colours may appear washed out. Measure the brightness of the red, green and blue light and the resulting value is your Colour Brightness or Colour Light Output (CLO).

Digital projectors produce colour in different ways, resulting in big differences in colour brightness. Many manufacturers only quote the brightness in lumens of their projectors’ white light. This just shows how bright a projector is when showing a plain white image; it doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Choose a 3LCD Projector?

As the number one projector manufacturer in Europe1, Epson leads the market in the development of projector technology. Epson projectors use a 3LCD projection engine to deliver bright, clear images that are rich in detail and colour

Many other projectors use 1-chip DLP2 projector systems, which create thousands of pulses of coloured light per second. They do this by shining lamp light through red, green, blue and white3 parts of a rotating colour wheel. These light pulses are then reflected by a DMD4 device, which is on a hinge and has a tiny mirror for each pixel of the image.

Single panel system
Single panel system

The series of rapid colour bursts is then projected onto the screen. The viewer's brain can't pick out the individual flickers – it mixes the basic colours that appear in succession in each pixel to come up with the final colour the viewer sees.

Epson’s 3LCD system works differently, using a combination of dichroic mirrors to separate the white light from the projector lamp into red, green and blue light. Each of the three light colours is then passed through its own LCD panel and recombined using a prism before being projected onto the screen.

With 1-chip DLP technology, colour break-up or the ‘rainbow effect’ can sometimes be seen. This occurs when the eye perceives the individual colours, and is a result of the colours being projected sequentially by the colour wheel. Epson’s 3LCD technology avoids this by including all three basic colours in each pixel of the projection, delivering superior Colour Light Output that’s easier on the eyes.

I have only had this projector for one week so I may come back with an update later. But for now I can say that I am very pleased indeed. I had originally bought an Optima HD600x-lv which is a great projector but I was very aware of the rainbow effect from it making it unwatchable for me. Obviously the majority of people never see it but I was unlucky in doing so. Anyway I had no option but to switch to an LCD so I chose the Epson. The 720p picture is every bit as good as the Optoma. I am mainly watching Bluray plus Freeview Hd through it and projecting at around 3m I am getting a diagonal display of approx 100". I really would not want it any bigger than that. It is very easy to set up and the remote is nicely laid out.It was by default on bright mode which I changed to Eco mode and this made little difference to the picture but halved the fan noise. It switches on quite fast and off almost instantly. No bad points found as yet-------.

UPDATE,

having owned this unit for several weeks now I am happy to say that that in my opinion it is faultless.
very pleased with my purchase.

I bought this projector in summer 2012 for less than £450. It may only be 720p HD Ready But, and its a big but!! the picture is outstanding!! I use it with a 100" portable screen and a tiger projector stand. Blu-Ray via PS3 looks simply amazing, bright vivid colours, ok so blacks are not brilliant but then projectors cannot project black!! Spend thousands on a better projector if you want to but for clear bright and above all BIG images at a low cost then buy one of these!! I have Sky HD running through it and its perfect. Standard def from sky is perfectly watchable too as are upscaled DVD's. Biggest bonus is this can be used in a bright room and it is still watchable. obviously in total darkness the picture comes alive.

The Projector has HDMI, Component (via VGA, adapter included), Vga and composite inputs. Also USB type A and B so you can plug your card reader in and view your now larger than life photos!!

The onboard speaker is weedy to say the least but at 3am when booming bass from your Home theatre is not welcome you can still use the projector without waking the dead!!

I use mine in ECO mode only. This keeps fan noise to a minimum (although its not intrusive on Normal mode either really) and it only dim's the image slightly but gives a claimed 5000hrs lamp life. Regarding the lamp timer, it doesn't update while you are using the projector, it calculates what you have used after shutdown then updates the counter.

There are plenty of adjustments for the image alignment but as one reviewer has said if the PJ is off centre and you need to "shift" the image then you will have an odd shaped square of light on the wall then your projected image inside of that. Although not distracting it can look weird!!

To conclude, if you have a small budget but are desperate for big screen fun, don't settle for a 42" TV when you can get much bigger for the same price.

Been using this for a while now. Have had absolutely no problems. Have been transporting it between schools, and it hasn't suffered at all (although I do use a metal flight case). As far as I can tell, it projects maximum resolution from my 2009 Macbook Pro. The brightness is great.

The ease of focus, zoom and keystone is a real boon when you have a room full of impatient and lively kids.

I was planning to spend around 100£ less on a presentation-type 3LCD projector, but I got advice on a forum and since I was going to use this for gaming and theatre in a small flat with less than 3m distance from projection point-viewing point, the guys there told me that this 720p HD-ready one was a much better and needed choice. The zoom lets me project an image around 2m wide from a little less than 3m which makes for the minimum for a "theatre like" experience, image is very sharp, no pixel-net over 2m distance and of course no rainbow effect. Perfect and best buy! And shipping was fine too.
