Product Description

The Aculaser C1700 from Epson is one of the most compact printers available on the market today. It has a USB port for easy connection to a computer terminal, and includes laser printing technology for professional documents in colour and black and white. A page output of 12 ppm in black and white and 10 ppm in colour means you won't be hanging around the printer waiting for your documents to print!

I bought this to replace an old, basic Epson colour laser printer whose name eludes me now. I needed one with an open tray to be able to insert different paper types easily for light business use. However, I get MULTIPLE paper jams on pre-printed sheets like company headed paper and pay slips, even when printing as few as SIX pages. Trying to print any number of company statements is a nightmare. I wish I had never bought it, and this printer might suffer an unfortunate "accident". After all these years I would expect a brand name like Epson to have sorted paper handling.

UPDATE: It gets worse... Printer refuses to feed in the mornings when our office is cold over winter, and takes an hour to get going, even with the back cover open to let air in. And now, just a few weeks outside of its 12 month warranty I get an awful grinding noise. Advised by Epson it is broken gears: pay for their authorised repairers to fix it!! If you are a consumer and not a business look up EU Directive 1999/44/EC which should give you two year's cover.

Bought a cheap colour laser printer for home as I got fed up with replacing dried up ink cartridges (yes, I tried to print something every week - didn't help much) so far very happy. Great quality for worksheets (I teach) and letters. Photos acceptable. Not yet had to pay for new toner cartridges.

For a Laser printer it was fairly cheap although the replacement cartridges are expensive, about £50 each for the high yield ones. I use it mainly in my degree studies to print off high volumes of notes and papers and as such it is ideal. It's straightforward to use and easily installed. It doesn't take up much space. An all-round, inexpensive laser printer.

Many problems with the black toner gears, very very noisy, print quality overall degraded badly.

I got this printer to replace an Epson laser printer which had worked well for nearly ten years. I tried to order another Epson laser printer, but Amazon referred me to another dealer which was out of stock and recommended this one instead. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. It is extremely temperamental about feeding paper, frequently reporting "Paper jam" or "Incorrect paper size loaded or no paper detected" with plain A4 paper, and it is virtually impossible to make it feed labels or thin card. The ink level in the colour cartridges goes down steadily over time even if I haven't used them, and if even one cartridge is empty it won't print anything. Recently it has taken to decorating all pages with faint magenta stripes, which is no doubt why the magenta cartridge has emptied so fast. On the other hand, frequently colour images are horribly banded, to the extent of being unusable. Even plain black text for some reason suffers a distortion on the capital letter S. The quality and output speed are no better than an inkjet of ten or fifteen years ago, sometimes worse, and having to deal with its crotchets is maddening. After only a year this printer is working so badly that I am seriously thinking about replacing it.
