Biography

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, USA, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released ... 4.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Early REM - Ring any bells? 22 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Well, what do we have here?

At a first glance, it looks like a good album for any REM fan, and don't get me wrong, it is. But... One look at the track list and a comparison with that of "The Best of REM" and you'll notice a few similarities.

To be honest the only reason I bought it was to complete my album collection and because it was cheap ;o)

Worth having if you're a fan, but if you're wanting to get into early REM, then I'd advise you to nuy either "Murmur" or "The Best of REM".

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Introducton To REM's Early Work 11 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
A collection of REM's first few years, this album is a good way for any fan of later period of REM to get to know their earlier years, covering all their albums until "Document". Casual listeners will already know "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" and "The One I Love" and there is much hear worth listening to. "Talk About The Passion" and "So. Central Rain" are amongst the best work they have ever done.

All in all, a good way to get to know the back catalogue of a great band,

5.0 out of 5 stars Pre-Warners, and rarely bettered!! 8 Mar 2002
Format:Audio CD
OK, the track listing on 'Eponymous' is very similar to that on 'The Best Of...'. That's no reason at all to give it any less stars than it deserves, as (a)the songs themselves all rate a '5', and (b)This was released FIVE YEARS before 'Best Of..'. I bought this back in 1988, after hearing the 'Chronic Town'ep at a friends place, and within the next six months I'd picked up all the other REM releases, such was the impact of this splendid compilation. A perfect doorway into the mumbly-era Stipe (am I the only person that can sing along to early REM tracks without having a clue as to what Stipey's actually saying? Thought not!!).
