Product Description

Product Description

Inscriptions on gravestones yield fascinating information about the dead, their lives and occupations and the way they lived. There may well be a verse epitpah of a philosophical or moralistic nature, but wit and humour, sometimes uninentional, creep in to enliven the sobre nature of the message. This book traces the background history of churchyard memorials and then describes many examples of inscriptions and epitaphs which somehow bring us much closer to the people they commemorate and the communities in which they lived.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection, 27 April 2010

Who says death cannot be amusing? The book contains a large assortment of, often funny, sometimes irreverent, epitaphs from tombs. Some are well-known but many are less familiar. As editor of a church magazine, I have found it an invaluable source of space-fillers. The book gave me great enjoyment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Way To Waste An Afternoon I Suppose, 27 May 2009
By Kelly Tipton "KellyBeth" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Epitaphs (Discovering) (Paperback)
This book is an ok read, don't get me wrong.
But Its super small!
The book itself is very tiny and the text is headache inducing.
Its got a lot of pictures, and its a decent book on the matter.
Its a very fast read, only took me about 2 hours.

If you're a beginner and just dipping your toes into the wading pool of tombstones, Then this book should be just fine for you.
If you're like me and you have a bookshelf of the stuff, Keep walking.
If youre wanting a really good book on the matter,
I would suggest Stories In Stone.
