Product Description

Product Description

What is epidemiology? What are the causes of a new disease? How can pandemics be prevented? Epidemiology is the study of the changing patterns of disease and its main aim is to improve the health of populations. It's a vital field, central to the health of society, to the identification of causes of disease, and to their management and prevention. Epidemiology has had an impact on many areas of medicine; from discovering the relationship between tobacco smoking and lung cancer, to the origin and spread of new epidemics. However, it is often poorly understood, largely due to misrepresentations in the media. In this Very Short Introduction Rodolfo Saracci dispels some of the myths surrounding the study of epidemiology. He provides a general explanation of the principles behind clinical trials, and explains the nature of basic statistics concerning disease. He also looks at the ethical and political issues related to obtaining and using information concerning patients, and trials involving placebos.

I was recommended this book by one of my tutors. It gives a clear outline for research methodology useful for research projects in medical school and easy to read. Would defintely recommend.

Format:Paperback
Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations. However, the purpose of the epidemiology is not just the passive study of those illnesses from a purely intellectual viewpoint, but rather coming up with strategies and means of preventing and controlling the disease outbreaks. Furthermore, it is not necessary for those diseases to be microbial in nature. Cancer, heart disease, and even things like obesity fall under the purview of epidemiology.

This very short introduction deals with all major aspects of epidemiology. Its modern approach is up to date and the book does not fail to mention some of the recent headline-grabbing viral epidemics, like SARS and H1N1 ("swine flu"). The book pays detailed attention to the methodology of good epidemiological research, and tries to explain it in an accessible and readable way. There are numerous interesting and detailed graphs and charts throughout the book, but the book does not assume a high level of technical knowledge. It can be used as an introductory text to the vast epidemiological literature, or as a concise refresher of some key concepts. It can also serve as a useful reference book.

Warning: Kindle version inferior to print version 13 April 2012
By Lee by the Sea - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Unfortunately this is one of those Kindle conversions that was ineptly done. Page numbers are not enabled. The Index has only page numbers, not even live jumps, so the Index is totally useless. Though the simpler graphs are usable, the more complex ones are not because their scale is so small that they are unreadable. And some of them are reproduced in light gray when their palettes could easily have been forced to black and white for readability. At least all the text appears to be present. The List of Illustrations has jumps to most, but not all, graphs and images. The Table of Contents jumps to the chapters. Text-to-speech is enabled. Shame on Amazon for not stating for every Kindle product--or at least for books where they matter--whether the Index and page numbers are functional. And until Kindle software developers implement a magnifier for Kindle book graphics like what's there for PDF files, Kindle versions of books like this one will be crippled. Caveat emptor.

Excellent short introduction 17 Dec 2011
By Dana P. Loomis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This little book is just what the title promises: a very short introduction. It lays out the essentials of epidemiology in a few brief, readable chapters. But unlike many books that try to present complex, academic ideas to a general readership, it is never sloppy or misleading. Although it doesn't treat any topic in depth or cover every aspect of the field, the great virtue of this book is that nothing it does cover needs to be corrected or explained away. As a result it provides both an informative summary for readers who need only an introduction to epidemiology and a solid foundation for those whose studies take them further. A colleague and I were so impressed with this book that we are using it in an introductory course on epidemiology for graduate students in public health.
