"This album is very intense, just like I like it, simply their best to date!" Tue Madsen
Founded 1991 in Canada, KATAKLYSM started their battle for the top spot with the now classic EP "The Mystical Gate Of Reincarnation" as their first official release on Nuclear Blast records in 1994. This album starts out with a Hellraiser sound bite from Pinhead (Pain has a face, let me show it to you) and then an incredible barrage of blast beat drumming overwhelms you! The guitar parts are furiously fast and heavy and then the vocals come blasting through and it is awe inspiring to say the least. Kataklysm sound stronger than ever!! This album is a blast of fresh air and is beyond amazing, it really stands out as one of the best examples of Death Metal to date. There are nuances of the first release "Mystical Gate of Re-incarnation" that perfectly compliment the newer musical direction of the band post Sylvian Houde and Maurizio Iacono's vocals have really come of age. The overall sound of the album is more controlled chaos rather than the wild chaotic sound of the previous albums and is pure Death Metal genius. If you love Death Metal and Kataklysm then you really need to own this Masterpiece. I wholeheartedly recommend this album to any Extreme Metal fan.

Northern hypermediocrity 20 Mar. 2007
By BD Obsessor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Being that I do not hear things quite like others (I have Audio Processing Disorder), Kataklysm's first album The Temple Of Knowledge really knocked me for a loop due to the combination of its over-the-top vocals and pelting drums. It was not terribly inventive or even original, but it did what it did, made no apologies, and did it well. Everything that Temple Of Knowledge was, Epic: The Poetry Of War is not. It has moments, and is still preferable to the mainstream crud out there, but it is also thoroughly mediocre by the standards that Kataklysm and bands of similar vintage have set. If you have heard any death metal of a fast tempo, you have heard Epic, simple as that. Whereas the blast beats used to be creative and creatively timed with the vocals, now they are generic to the extent that veteran listeners will not even notice. And given that the drumming combined with the vocals were the entirety of Kataklysm's strength, that is an incredibly bad sign. They should have stopped after The Prophecy.

good death metal 2 April 2003
By "jeremiahz" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
this is the first Kataklysm album i purchased. after a friend told me to pick up one of their albums i picked up this one, and i found it very good. Kataklysm is like the death metal version of Dream Theater. they are very complex at everything they do and their tracks are full of ear candy. most of the tracks are longer than most bands and they definitly don't have any filler. "Epic" is an album that all death metal fans should have.

great cd 14 Sept. 2005
By C. Pedersen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a killer record. A great step in the evolution of their sound and songwriting. This is death metal done right. If you don't own any Kataklysm yet, DEFINITELY start with 'Shadows and Dust' though, but you can't go wrong with this cd.

I MANIPULATE YOUR SOUL!!!! 11 May 2003
By CoryCox - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is almost better than Shadows And Dust, but not quite! This has some awesome songs on it like Manipulator Of Souls. That is one of the best songs by Kataklysm i have heard. The riffs are so awesome, it just make me want to kick someones ...! The drums are so fast it just makes me want to bang my head against the door. The singers voice is awesome, its like a mix of Death and Black metal. What im saying is all the songs on here rule and any death fan should already own it, and if not, you should go buy it. HAIL METAL!!!!!

Northern Hyper-Laugh - Ever had Canadian Cheese ? 13 Feb. 2006
By Nailed To Gold - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Predictable and cheezy. I sold my copy of this CD. You can sense the forthcoming sell-out. They tried so hard to make all these songs "catchy". Kataklysm have gotten worse and worse as time goes on; not that they were anything special to begin with.

I would recommend earlier Kataklysm. Try Sorcery or The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation.
