Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Transparent on 6 Nov. 2009
Format: Paperback
This excellent book would be appreciated by Christians and non-believers alike. John Eldredge asks the reader to consider a number of books and films which have enjoyed major success. What is it that has endeared those stories to us?

His answer is that those epics reflect the "big story" into which God has placed all of us. It is the struggle between good and evil in which we empathize with the (reluctant) hero. In each of us there is an inbred desire to be part of just such a story and it is this which draws us towards God.

The book is particularly cheap and worthy of being given to others who may be curious about the Christian faith.

For those who liked Epic, I also recommend Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive which expands on the same theme for those who are already Christians.

This is an excellent contemporary retelling of the gospel as a Story. Or rather, The Story.

Using quotes and characters from famous films and books, Eldredge paints a picture of the story we find ourselves in, from 'In the beginning..' through to what part we play.

And it's short! Readable, accessible and very good value for money.
