Product Description

From the Back Cover

Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into a modern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it can speak powerfully today.

Excellent concise commentary. It brings the book of Ephesians through to contemporary applications, which makes it very useful for sermon preparation.

Great Help! 31 Oct. 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
As a minister, I decided to preach through the book of Ephesians. Because I tend to preach with a more exegetical style, I was very interested in having a commentary that examined the history of the text and gave practical use for today. This commentary accomplished all of this and more. Yes, there were times when I felt that Snodgrass's application was perhaps not for what I was looking. However, the most significant part to me was exegetically handling the Word of God. I recommend this commentary to both lay people and ministers.

Excellent NIV Commentary! 18 April 2010
By Mark K. Wickersham - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I purchased this book a few years ago for a hermeneutics course I took at Colorado Christian University. Although a couple of the consulting editors of the NIV Application Commentary Series have some different understandings of Scripture than I do, I had absolutely no problems with Professor Snodgrass' exegesis. The book starts off with an introduction to the NIV Application Commentary Series, a general editor's preface, an author's preface, a general introduction to the Book of Ephesians and an annotated bibliography before providing 330 pages of rich text and commentary on what is one of the most influential documents ever written. A Scripture index and a subject index are provided in the back of the book. Every passage of Ephesians has the original meaning examined, the original context and the contemporary context bridged and the significance of the passage discussed in a way that engages life today. Snodgrass's book is 14 years old, but the contemporary significance is not outdated by any means. Meaning that is found in literal versions such as the ESV or NASB that is lost in the NIV is properly addressed. This book was a great help in writing a paper focused on Ephesians 2:1-10 and will continue to assist me in my studies of Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

A Must for Ephesians 25 Sept. 2003
By Baseball junkie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Dr. Snodgrass turns sermon prep into a Spirit filled experience by offering profound thought and application of Ephesians to the modern life. Klyne takes Paul's call to "ground, shape and challenge the readers so they might live a life of faith" to the contemporary church through exegetical insights and profound application. This commentary is simply outstanding at numberous levels. It has impacted my spiritual walk and has been a powerful preaching/teaching tool.

highly rated[...] 26 Nov. 2008
By Chris Ridgeway - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
New site[...] aggregates user ratings, academic weight, series, and notes from the Denver Seminar Journal. It currently rates Klyne's Snodgrass' Ephesians commentary in the top three available. Denver (Craig L. Blomberg, et al) marks this one as the "Must Have" Evangelical commentary on Ephesians.

Seminary students who have had Professor Snodgrass (we call him Klyne), have a bit of an inside track that may be helpful. It's likely there isn't a more respected (and liked!) professor at North Park Theological Seminary (and far wider circles could easily be argued). He is precise, pastoral, theological, encyclopedic, genuine, careful, and insanely familiar with the text.

Helpful Commentary 7 Nov. 2012
By parkerj - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The NIV Application Commentary (NIVAC) is a unique commentary that seeks to give the reader both the meaning of a passage of Scripture in its original context and a practical application for today's life.

The NIVAC on Ephesians begins with an introduction chapter that discusses different areas of the book. Like most introductions this one covers the message of Ephesians, the purpose, its authorship, and an outline of the book. The bibliography is a nice benefit in helping the reader find more works on Ephesians.

The Text and Commentary section of this book will divide each passage of Scripture into three sections:
Original Meaning - This is the section where the author will explain the meaning of the text in its original context. This section is fairly easy to read and is excellent for both Pastors and Laymen.
Bridging Context - In this section the author gets us from the original context to the contemporary context by a "bridge". This is usually the shorter section, as its intent is a very simple one: bring the reader from first century times to 21st century times. The comments in this section are very helpful and this is usually is where the author discusses the main points of the chapter as a whole, and how the original context may be "fleshed out" over different time periods.
Contemporary Significance - This is the section that sets this commentary apart from many others, in my opinion. It answers the question that every reader of the Bible asks: "How does this apply to my life?" This section is such a treat for the reader and often times in other volumes of this series I find myself checking to see what is said in this section, even in clear passages that I may not be studying with a need for a commentary. This section is outstanding. This commentary was published in 1996 but the contemporary significance does not feel outdated. As with any commentary that gives a practical application, the reader may not agree with everything that the author puts forth, but there is a lot of quality application for everyone.

I would highly recommend this commentary to anyone looking for a solid intermediate commentary. Ephesians has a lot of depth to it (possible second only to Romans) and a good readable commentary is very beneficial. This commentary gives readers an opportunity to "dig in" to Ephesians and proves to be an excellent resource. I received a free copy of this commentary from Zondervan in exchange for a review. I was not coerced in any way to write a positive review.
