I enjoyed Epaminondas and His Auntie being read to me as a small child, and the laughter we shared as he desperately tried to follow directions. I then enjoyed it again learning to read to my siblings and sharing the laughter and his antics with them. As an adult, my sister and I shared the story with our children on tape. My son is now grown and still has that tape, and still recounts the story. It's a story that shares warmth, laughter and the earnest attempts of a child learning to follow instructions.

I thought this was lost to me forever. I am now 55 years old and imagine my amazement when I saw this book sitting in the bookstore window with other forgotton books and tales of long ago. My mother used to tell me and my brothers this story when we were children. I never realized that this story was from a book. i always felt the greatest sympathy for poor, silly Epaminondas because he just couldn't seem to get it right no matter how hard he tried. I can now read this adorable story to my grand daughter even though I didn't get to read it to her mother(my daughter). Because of political correctness and our efforts to cleanse everything beforehand some of the most charming and insightful stories for children have been tossed aside. How wonderful it is to find this treasure.

As a teacher of 30 years, I read this book to my students in grades 2 - 5. It was the most requested read aloud book that I had. (particularly among older students) It was hard to find for years, but now it is easily within everyone's reach. Children laugh at Epaminondas, but it also helps them understand that everything that people say should not be taken literally.
