Not everyone gets Mogwai, but that’s what makes them great. Theirs is a majestic, powerful sound where barely a word is spoken yet it is the antithesis of background music. Album and song titles bemuse, confuse and delight in equal measure and live, they are utterly unstoppable.

Rave Tapes is the eighth studio album by Mogwai and their second on Rock Action, the label they set up ... Read more in Amazon's Mogwai Store

Mogwai's discography is a greatly textured commodity and this compilation of Chemikal EPs leans more towards the filmscore-esque beauty that the band conjure up rather than the heavier end of their spectrum.
The sweeping landscapes are painted freshly and delicately on tracks like "Superheroes of BMX" with its drum machines providing a rare departure from the more usual bass, snare and hi hat set up. Don't forget the jewel that is "Stanley Kubrick". The original "Xmas Steps" menacingly builds up a bass heavy cruchendo - before a blaze of fuzz quite different from the version on 1999's "Come on die young" only to lament into a heart wrenching benediction of strings. Rarely has such frailty dovetailed from spikey whitenoise with such startling effect.
If classical music were written on contemporary instruments - then this is it. The emotion, the contrast, the beauty.
To me this collection is more reminicent of "Young Team" than the band's more recent offerings, so if you liked the 1997 album release you should like this. Whilst "Stereodee" still outstays its welcome, this album makes great listening for those who did or didn't buy these releases first time around alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars smooth classics 9 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is one fantastic album, containing some of Mogwai's finest moments. As this is Mogwai there are no fillers, but some of the tracks, such as Small Children in the Background, Rollerball, Burn Girl Prom Queen, Stanley Kubrick, and the awesome Superheroes of BMX, stand out as stone cold classics. Top dog though is the ten minute monster Xmas Steps. With beautiful opening guitar interplay slowly building to a stunning midsection, all brutal distortion and killer drumming, followed by a haunting violin comedown, this marks one of the defining moments of British music in the nineties. Brilliant stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best mogwai album!!! 23 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album is absolutely stunning. All of the tracks on this album are amazing, even stereodee. Because of Stereodees 9 or 10 minute chaotic and screeching noise rock, some say that this song is a dissapointment. I disagree, first of all the song has very very good build up before and after the noise section of the song, and the noise section is mind scrambling and tense, making for a very exciting listen! over all this is possibly the best album that mogwai has released because of other classics like superheros of bmx, small children in the backround, stanley kubrick, burn girl prom queen, and rage:man. this album catches mogwai during some of their most tender, relaxing, and beautiful moments but also gets very heavy and thrashy, and they even venture into experimental noise in songs like superheros of bmx and stereodee. I cant do this album justice, you will just have to check it out yourself. This album is definately one of the best of my whole collection, so check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, moving 17 Nov 2003

Format:Audio CD
Possibly my favourite of the Mogwai recordings. Often overlooked, this album shows the whole range of Mogwai's moods: from serene through provocative, to destructive. The wonderful 'Superheores of BMX', the beautiful 'now you're taken' and a version of Xmas steps really superior to that on CODY form the highlights to this unmissable album, with the bonus of the wonderfully eerie video to 'Stanley Kubrick' on the enhanced CD. The one let down i find is 'stereodee'. After a rousing first 3 minutes, a full ten minutes of destructive static are unleashed. Incredible when live, but just gets a bit boring coming out of your speakers. Skip on that track, unless you love your mogwai loud and raw, and enjoy a really moving album.

Excellent. The slow, at times building, always moving, melancholic and distant tunes of a band that should be a household name already. These tunes say to me that winter's on its way. Tunes are samey, yes, but what a tune - Twin Peaks meets slack Indie cool. Let this be your soundtrack some time.
