Review

'A good introduction to environmental design' – Lecturer, Nottingham Trent University

Product Description

Written and edited by a team of specialists at Max Fordham LLP, one of the UK’s leading environmental and building services engineering consultancies, Environmental Design is the result of their extensive experience in designing environmentally-friendly buildings. The principles of their approach, which they have taught in numerous schools of architecture and engineering, are clearly presented here.

The book starts with some basic scientific principles and environmental issues and then moves on to site planning, energy use, materials and building form. Natural ventilation systems, high-efficiency mechanical equipment and alternative energy sources are also covered. State-of-the-art buildings of exceptional quality are incorporated throughout the text and illustrate the authors’ belief that environmentally responsible architecture can be visually exciting. They conclude with a selection of detailed case studies of award-winning projects – including, new for this third edition, Beaufort Court, King's Langley and the National Trust Headquarters, Swindon.

This book is essential reading for architects, engineers, planners and students of these disciplines.

excellent book 14 May 2008
Format:Paperback
I am currently studying an MSc in Renewable Energy at Reading University. One of the visiting lecturers for our Energy in Buildings module was Max Fordham himself, who wrote the preface to this book. That was a factor when I was looking for a book on buildings. It was a good decision though. I think it's an excellent book. It covers a great deal of what we have been studying on our course. Topics covered included heat pumps, u-values, natural ventilation, lighting, embodied energy in materials, and lots else. Part 2 of the book contains a series of case studies of particularly energy efficient buildings, which I also found interesting. I suppose someone studying sustainable technology might say it does not deal with other environmental considerations, although it does touch on them. The other area it does not really cover are homes. Most of the studies are buildings used by many people, such as theatres, offices and colleges.

Great book. Clear explanations of concepts, with just enough maths to explain the theory. Really enjoying how easy it is to learn from, and the use of current examples is really inspiring.
