Georgette Heyer's brilliant and highly acclaimed series of detective novels, now in a handsome new package

Product Description

It is no ordinary Christmas at Lexham Manor. Six holiday guests find themselves the suspects of a murder enquiry when the old Scrooge, Nathaniel Herriad, who owns the substantial estate, is found stabbed in the back. whilst the delicate matter of inheritance could be the key to this crime, the real conundrum is how any of the suspects could have entered the locked room to commit this foul deed. For Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, 'tis the season to find whodunit. (20040922)

Uncle Joe has arranged a family Christmas at his brother's house, and he's determined to have a real old-fashioned Christmas, with decorations, log fires and goodwill to all men.

His plans go wildly astray when his brother, Nat, is found stabbed to death in a locked room. It doesn't seem fair, especially as Nat hated Christmas and did not want the family party in the first place!

The long-suffering detective from Scotland Yard, called in on Christmas Eve, finds that there are plenty of suspects - but how did any of them manage to kill Nat? The room was locked from the inside, and there's no sign of the weapon.

What's more, if Nat's wife, Maud, doesn't stop going on about her lost book - the life of the Empress of Austria, there's likely to be another murder!

Once again, Georgette Heyer gives us likeable characters, and there's the inevitable love interest.

Georgette Heyer belongs to the "golden age" of detective writers. You won't find the blood and gore that today's writers provide, but you will find witty dialogue and clever plots.

I hope you enjoy it - I did.

This is my favourite of all Georgette Heyer's excellent mystery stories. Bad-tempered old Nat Herriard is reluctant host to a family party of ill-assorted relatives, organised by his irritating brother Joe. Nat spends most of his time goading his various relations, and not surprisingly ends up murdered. The splendid Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, one of fiction's best detectives, is called in to solve the mystery. He is also pestered to investigate the mysterious disapearance of a book, the life of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, which Joe's wife Maud was reading, she is very anxious to finish it and is more concerned with the missing book than the murder (I sympathise with her entirely, that's exactly how I feel about books myself)But are the missing book and the murder unrelated? Read this delightful mystery and find out

Joseph Herriard arranges what he hopes will be an enjoyable house party over the Christmas period. But the house belongs to his brother Nathanial, who is far from being a sociable person and who positively dislikes at least some of the guests. By the end of Christmas Eve Nathanial has quarrelled with nearly all his unwelcome guests and has retired to his room to dress for dinner. But that is the last any of his guests see of him as someone has stabbed him in the back and he's dead.

The local police are less than happy to be called out on Christmas Eve and they soon put in a request for Scotland Yard to take over the case. Inspector Hemingway reluctantly makes his way to Lexham Manor to try and find out who has murdered Nat. He soon discovers that all the guests had a motive but he cannot see how anyone could have carried out the crime in a room which is locked from the inside. This is an excellent locked room mystery with plenty of red herrings and real clues. The characters are interesting and believable and who did it will keep you guessing until almost the very end.

I loved Joseph's wife, Maud, with her deadpan expressions and her search for her missing library book - a biography of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria; the irascible but far from stupid - nephew, Stephen and his sister Paula; Valerie Dean - Stephen's fiancée at the start of the book and her monstrous mother who turns up to protect her from the police. As ever Inspector Hemingway is on top form with his irritable relationship with his sidekick Sgt Ware and his charming manner with all the suspects. This is an excellent read for anyone who likes their mysteries traditional with interesting characters and a convoluted plot.
