4.0 out of 5 stars The work requires a book length investigation, 4 Mar 2009
By Frank Bierbrauer (Wales, Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this small text Rudolf Arnheim writes an essay on entropy and art. What does this really mean ? Arnheim was actually a psychologist by training and came to the artistic route later on. This means that, given his classical European education, he would have been exposed to a great deal of science such as physics and chemistry and it is here that he would have met the concept of entropy as used in physics, especially thermodynamics. The concept of entropy has always been associated with both information and order.

In this book Arnheim attempts to relate these scientific issues to art, especially painting and music, more so painting. He also considers sculpture. The book attempts to clarify the physical concept and express it in regards to art. Unfortunately it doesn't really succeed. Although the ideas are often brilliant they are also cut short in their deepest expression. It is remarkable how he starts to express an idea in regards to an underlying concept, such as the role structure plays in the definition of entropy, and then refuses to deepen his investigation. One feels that there is so much more that can be said. This happens all the way through. I hope that the ideas and concepts expressed in this essay are further developed in his other works. So far it seems that they are e.g. his work on Visual Perception.

An excellent essay for what it intends to do but really requires a whole book.
