2.0 out of 5 stars Not her best. 7 Mar 2014

Not the best use of Natalie's excellent voice. Enjoyable but not the best material for her to attempt in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful partnership 27 Feb 2014

I heard extracts from this on CD review on Radio 3 in the car, and it really brightened up the morning. The whole disc is a real joy, with classic music and playing from Legrand, and Dessay at her most lively and flighty. with guest appearance by Petibon, couldn't be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh air 19 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love this cd. The piano playing of Legrand is in a class of its own, the arrangements witty and varied. The French language is difficult to sing for non french speakers, here with French performers everything is superbly idiomatic. The highlights: nous sommes les soeurs jumelles, is just fantastic, moulins de mon coeur, and le cinema. I find Natalie Dessay surprisingly convincing in this repertoire. However there are moments when her wonderful voice outsings those trying to trying to duet with her.

The greatest of 'em all.
Exelent job Natalya. She's the only one who can do it so well both in Opera than in Popular music.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! 11 Nov 2013

Normally, I hate it when female opera singers sing mainstream music...they either sound like they're slumming, or trying to swat a fly with a Cadillac. Mme. Dessay, however, achieves spot-on perfection as she sings in a sexy, clear, delightful new voice. This isn't Lucia, the pyrotechnics are much more subtle, but listen... it takes incredible skill and talent to sing this difficult, emotional, lovely music so effortlessly and beautifully. Brava, Natalie!

truly wonderful I have always treasured Legrand's work but was really pleased by the songs as performed. The quality of the vocal performance was superb and really made the music come alive. Thank you for the gift of two great performers coming together.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less than the best 11 Nov 2013

Mme Dessay disappoints in this pop release. Instead of her usual brilliant coloratura voice we hear the voice somewhat drained of color in mostly straight tone without vibrato and sounding a bit harsh in the close miking of the recording. The piano background with Legrand is well done but thin sounding compared to lush orchestrations which we normally hear in his music. It is a pleasure to hear Dessay's clear French diction. However, her tentative interpretation of "Papa Can You Hear Me?" does not come close to Streisand's original Yentl rendtion full of emotion. Likewise her somewhat hurried rendition of the theme from "Les parapluies de Cherbourg" does not erase memories of the achingly wistful original soundtrack recording with Catherine Deneuve. Contributions from baritone Laurent Naouri and soprano Patricia Petibon on two of the songs do little to help the mood. There's a certain harshness to the sound. On first hearing, casual listeners in the other room said this recording was annoying. For the best from this beloved soprano, listen to her fabulous "The Miracle of the Voice" from Virgin Classics.
