Liked the chapter on working with volunteers,

Entitled to Respect: How to be confident and assertive in the workplace. Suzanne and Conrad Potts.
I've read lots of books on assertiveness and my favourite has always been the classic Assertiveness in the Workplace by Ken and Kate Back (another husband and wife team). This new book happily acknowledges and builds on the work that has gone before but I still think this is a great new addition to my library. It's split into two helpful sections; first The Toolbox that explores helpful things you need to know such as clear definitions of assertive behaviour, language patterns, non-verbal behaviour, self talk. Most people will find the ideas about how to say `No' helpful because we've all agreed to doing something occasionally that we regretted later. All the chapters in the Toolbox have exercises at the end because, like most these books, you won't behave assertively just by reading it. Then the next section is split into Work Situations where assertive behaviour will get you further than passive or aggressive behaviour. These chapters outline very recognisable situations for most of us and then provide Solution Steps towards resolving the situations or handling them more effectively. I particularly liked having a chapter on `Working with Volunteers' as this is rarely covered in most business books. Definitely worth its £12.99. ISBN 978-1-84528-421-3

I've only just bought the book, so haven't read it yet, but confidently bought a couple of copies, as I know Suzanne and Conrad are brilliant. I've been lucky enough to have received training from both.

Entitled to (lots of) Respect -,
This review is from: Entitled to Respect: How to be confident and assertive in the workplace (Paperback)
Airports around the World have benefited from my weakness for acquiring management books that rarely deliver on the cover blurb. This one is surprisingly different. I say 'surprisingly' because the authors manage to cram a considerable volume of useful techniques into 200 pages. Topics such as body language, visualisation and negotiation are well described with self completion exercises to reinforce the exlained methods at the end of each section.
But perhaps the most useful element is how the authors enable the reader to steer around the bear-traps of the work place to positively manage superiors, peers, subordinates and external contacts - quite a feat in the space provided. I suspect this book will be most valuable for those who want more influence in their work place or for the employee moving into management and need more understanding of what will be required from them. I can think of a few personnel departments that would do well to follow some of the exercises described here. In either case, this is well written and accessible effort - highly recommended.
