More About the Author

Gill Paul was born in Glasgow and now lives in London on the edge of Hampstead Heath, where she swims in the outdoor women's pond all year round. (It's supposed to be good for you if it doesn't kill you...) She writes historical fiction and non-fiction and has a new novel coming out in May, The Affair, which is set in Rome in 1961/2 when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fell in love on the set of Cleopatra. A long-time Elizabeth Taylor fan, Gill was fascinated by that era when the paparazzi went wild over the Taylor-Burton affair, and churchmen and politicians condemned them. Society was starting to change but divorce was uncommon and women still gave up work on marriage, so Elizabeth Taylor was very modern for her times.

Gill's previous novel, Women and Children First, is set on board the Titanic and follows survivors for three months after the sinking to explore the way the shock affected them. Her non-fiction book, Titanic Love Stories, is about honeymoon couples on the ship who went from celebrating their marriages to fighting for their lives. And she has also written Civil War Love Stories, about couples who wrote to each other during the American Civil War.

As well as history, Gill writes on health, nutrition, relationships and Pilates, and is currently working on a book of World War Two love stories, due for publication in 2014.

From the Publisher

A thrilling, sexy, modern suspense story
Jenny is the director of a London publishing company, a self-contained, independent and successful woman. She is completely unprepared for the exciting adventure she embarks on when she meets the handsome Marc at a party, and impulsively accompanies him to his family home in France. The setting is perfect, the sex fantastic . . . It seems like the beginning of something amazing, even if Marc seems to be nursing secrets. Then, on the way home from a perfect evening, in the middle of the French countryside, he simply vanishes.

Jenny can only return to England alone. But she cannot stop thinking of Marc and soon she is obsessed with his disappearance. Where is he and why did he abandon her? Before long Jenny is on a dangerous trail that will lead her towards a terrifying revelation…

A bold and engrossing novel from an exciting new author. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

What a brilliant book! I read this in one sitting, and simply could not put it down! I loved Jenny - the quintessential modern woman - and could not work out what was happening until the very end. A terrific mystery, with lots of mind-twisting plot changes along the way. So nice to have a historical thriller with some sensitive characterisation and a plot that does not give itself away. Well done, Gill Paul! I loved the Resistance sections - this book was clearly well researched! I would wholeheartedly recommend it!

I couldn't put it down! It's tremendously well written, and it really keeps you reading, but there's also something about the predicament of the heroine - discovering how little she suddenly knows about the man she loves - that speaks to so many people. Except that this time, she manages to turn the tables.

A superb first novel that captures interest from the first line and never lets go. A compelling story develops from a diary from the second world war and is intricately woven into a modern love story - modern in that the protagonist has lost her man, and she realises that she never really knew him at all. True-to-life characters, a fascinating peek into the war from a woman's point of view, and a tight, whodunnit plot that leaves you wondering till the very last pages and beyond. Excellent.

Gill Paul's first novel, Enticement, is an absorbing study of a contemporary, highly-sexed, very capable, business woman, competing against high odds in a male-dominated world. It is also a page-turner - a very readable thriller set in France, New York and London. The opening seems, at first, to be a calculated bit of soft porn designed to prompt the reader's engagement. But Paul is a more accomplished and serious writer than that, and the story is soon seen to be, among other things, a convincing account of the way in which sexual enticement can lead a person into trouble and danger. The account of the contemporary publishing world in London is especially absorbing and convincing. Running parallel with the story of the central character, Jenny, who runs a publishing business in London, is a remarkable series of quotations from the diary and tape-recordings produced by Jenny's grandmother about her experiences in France during the war. Throughout most of the book, Gill Paul deliberately leave the reader wondering about the relevance of the grandmother's account, but, in the end, succeeds, with great skill, in satisfactorily welding this into the rest of the story, as well as gratifyingly tying up all the other intriguing and seemingly unanswerable trails. Highly recommended. Gill Paul's future as a writer is awaited with eager anticipation.

Endurance is so exciting that you can't turn the pages quickly enough. It races along, delicious lust intermingling with the confrontation of serious issues. A wonderful read. Is it really a first novel? Gill Paul's writing is too assured, could it be the non de plume of another author?
