Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Entertaining Solo came into existence when the author, Claire Macdonald, was asked by a retired friend to write a book for people who like to entertain, but who have to do it alone. Although Bridget Jones singletons would benefit from the book (no more blue soup) the recipes are more suited to Claire's retired friend--they're not overly modern and can tend toward the stodgy (deep-fried parmesan balls anyone?).

The premise is a great one though. Claire has assembled hundreds of recipes, from starters to puddings plus "extras" (including a gorgeous chocolate sauce) that can all be prepared in advance in order to limit the time spent in the kitchen while entertaining guests. A quick grill, re-heat or assembly of an accompaniment is all many of the dishes need.

The ham hock and bean casserole is a slow-cooking one-pot meal that can be cooked during the day and kept in a low oven until it's time to serve. The Carbonara pasta au gratin can be made a day in advance, kept in the fridge and then placed in the oven 30 minutes before serving. For the super-organised there are many-part recipes such as warm fudge apple slices with spiced ice cream--the ice-cream can be made up to six weeks in advance, the fudge three days in advance and the apple slices will keep for a couple of hours in a low oven. You get the picture.

Claire also offers tips on reducing the washing up (also a one-person job if entertaining solo) and suggestions for drinks to serve before dinner to reduce fuss over ice and mixers.

The recipes range from those suited to formal dining to more light-hearted fare and include vegetarian options. As long as you remember to stock up on cling film and clear plenty of space in the fridge, you'll be fooling all your guests into thinking that entertaining solo is easy. --Amelia Crook

Product Description

Over 40 per cent of the population in the UK live alone. Many choose to be single whilst others are left by themselves having shared their lives before. Claire Macdonald's collection of recipes is aimed specifically at those who have to cook and entertain single-handed. With an emphasis on meals that can be prepared in advance, or main courses served up in one dish, her recipes enable you to relax with your guests and enjoy your evening with friends, free from the stove. The wide range of appetising, seasonal recipes also include numerous tips and recommendations for avoiding the horrors of a huge clear-up and wash-up afterwards.

Entertained solo 26 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I received this book for Christmas and have now tried several of the recipes which, to a complete cooking novice, are thankfully easy to prepare and most of the ingredients are available at my local supermarket.

The book is laid out in an easy to use format from starters and light dishes through meat and game and finally my favourite section puddings!! My favourite recipe was the dark chocolate and cappuccino mousse cake which was light, moist, chocolatey and very moreish

Many of the dishes can be prepared well in advance and cooked on the day which is perfect if you are cooking for a special occassion or large party.

The quantities in the recipes are for 6 people however it was simple enough to reduce the weights in the recipes to cater for 4 people.

My only criticism is that very few recipes have pictures of the final product which although not a problem does leave a novice guessing if their hard work has turned out properly.

Overall a good cookery book probably for the more adventurous and experienced cook.
