Brilliant little book - more use than anything else for giving ideas about cheap (and free) playthings that suit your child at each stage of their development. Highly recommended.

This book is absolutely chock full of great ideas for things to do with your kids.
They could have made the book much thicker with half the content and charged double the price. Instead every page is loaded with practical (and inexpensive) ideas. The other good thing is that it's short and concise -- you don't have to do a lot of reading for each item.
If you're looking for an activity book, this book really is worth considering.

Great book!
If you buy this book, don't buy entertaining and educating babies and toddlers, because it has all the contents of this book at the beginning of entertaining and educating your preschool child!
This book is full of great ideas and activities, some of which you probably do anyway with your child.
I've found it very useful.

I got this out of the library and it was so good I bought a copy. It has been in print for 15 years or so and it's not surprising: most people who have seen mine have also bought one. One tip - if anything requires bells you can get them from pet shops. Health and safety regs preclude haberdashers from selling bells with ringers, which rather defeats the object!

I got this book from the library and ended up buying it.
This book is completely full with loads of ideas of how to develope your child and entertain them at the same time. It goes from birth upto 5years old. Nearly all the ideas in the book you can do using everyday items in your home. The idea of making your own cooker out of boxes and paint is an example. Colour drawing withing the book for children having fun and learning at the same time. It is easy to read and is straight to the point.

I've bought this book so many times for new parents and parents of toddlers just as it was bought for me years ago. I don't understand why it has gone out of print. It has so many basic ideas of things to do with small people, simple easy to do, entertaining, fun things like junk modelling, making and using home made play doh, making bubbles, sand play, water play, so much. Things you probably knew but have forgotten. Things that don't involve the TV or a computer or expensive toys. It's all related to a simple developmental chart (but you don't have to use it), it tells you what an average, typically developing child can do at a given age and what sort of fun things you can do and play with them. Nothing expensive, cardboard boxes and kitchen supplies are the main ingredients. I love it.

My daughter bought this book when she began her placement in a nursery. She was studying for a CACHE Level 3 in Childcare. She wanted some ideas as starting points for activities and for her coursework. She found this book very useful as a starting point though she did adapt the ideas that she used. She said that it wasn't the best book she has come across for activities but it did have a few different suggestions which she hadn't come across elsewhere. She said that often assumptions were made about the materials that people would have to hand - some of which she couldn't imagine anyone having to hand!
Not the best book for preschool children but some useful ideas.
