Product Description

What happens when one's larger-than-life military parents--disciplined, distinguished, exacting--begin sliding out of control? The General struggles to maintain his invulnerable façade against Parkinson's disease; his lovely wife manifests a bizarre dementia. Their three grown children, desperate to save the situation, convince themselves of the perfect solution: an upscale retirement community. But as soon as their parents have been resettled within its walls, the many imperfections of its system of care begin to appear.

Charting the line between comedy and pathos, Molly Best Tinsley’s memoir, Entering the Blue Stone, dissects the chaos at the end of life and discovers what shines beneath: family bonds, the dignity of even an unsound mind, and the endurance of the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entering the Blue Stone 9 Jun 2012
By Suzanne Fretwell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Anyone who has been through (or is GOING through) the emotional and exhausting effort of caring for aging parents through their last years/ months/weeks/days of life will see themselves in this story. I plan to give copies to my children to help them know what to do when I'm at that point... but I hope to make some decisions and changes in my lifestyle BEFORE they have to deal with these tough issues. I hope I can make it easier on them by getting rid of the accumulation of 'stuff' and getting myself situated in a safe, comfortable, reasonably priced facility while I'm still able to make decisions on my own! (I also hope I'll know when I can't!)
So well-written, so honest... this book conveys important life lessons as well as affirms the human spirit. (Lots of humor make this an excellent read, especially for those who don't want to think about such matters!)
This little memoir would generate lively and meaningful discussion for book clubs and support groups... and maybe professionals in the geriatric field.

5.0 out of 5 stars No wasted words 16 May 2012

"Entering the Blue Stone" is a very sad accounting of the author's parents who cannot "age in place" and end up in an assisted living facility. It is the all too familiar tale of how the grown children become the "parents" of their parents.
The story is beautifully written in spare sentences. Every word counts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mesmerizing and touching family story 12 Nov 2012
By Richard H. Rubin - Published on Amazon.com
I found "Entering the Blue Stone" absolutely remarkable on a number of levels -- searingly honest in its observations, pitch-perfect in its expression, on every page a reminder of what makes us human. It's not only a life-honoring tribute to Ms. Tinsley's parents, it's a glorious gift to all the rest of us.

As a long-time physician and medical educator, I've read a number of profoundly impactful end-of-life stories, and "Entering the Blue Stone" is right up there with the very best of them.
