Adversity usually brings out the best in artists; and Timbre, the third album from Sophie B Hawkins is no exception. After a protracted struggle to release this collection of sumptuously arranged, love-swept songs in the exact form she desired, some of which were written as long ago as 1996, Hawkins has issued Timbre on her own label. (The singer wrote all the songs, played all instruments--udu, djembe and marimba included--and produced the album.) The result? An almost exquisite, lilting array of love and spooky protest songs, bolstered with an additional CD of two previously unreleased songs (the piano-led homily "You Turn Me On", "Travelling Light"), home demos, remixes and delightful videos. Throughout the 20-odd songs here, Hawkins shows a musical integrity and elegance that suggests she is closer to Randy Newman than Alanis... and thank the Goddess for that. --Everett True

Being a real fan of Sophie B., She is really great! I cannot compare her other works with this new album of her because all of them are really good! This is a must have for all of you Sophie Fans! You won't regret it.
