Product Description

No jockey likes being labelled a cheat. Least of all by a Stewards' Enquiry. Kelly Hughes career looks doomed. He knows he's been framed, but finding the reason could prove dangerous. Especially with a killer on his tail...

Hughes' own enquiry uncovers dynamite that could blow the racing world to smithereens. Only a few powerful - and violent - men know the sordid secret. And they'll go to extraordinary lengths to keep it that way. Murder is just one option...

Here's a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Dick Francis' thriller novel.

Top-notch thriller 29 April 2009
By H. Beentje TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Enquiry (first published 1969)
Excellent - a real cracker of a story, fast-paced and extremely well written, about a jockey being 'warned off' for cheating at a race (I am not spoiling the story - this is all on page one!). He knows he didn't do it - and intends to find out who is behind the false accusations. Francis has you vehemently on the jockey's side, raging against the injustice, the being sneered at, the taunts. And somehow he gets you slowly falling in love, along with the jockey falling in love, as well.
The characters are well fleshed out, the dialogue is believable, the research is impeccable.

Dick Francis writes so well that there does not seem to be a superfluous word in the book. A taut story, crafted by a master, and another absolute smasher!

On hearing of the news that Dick Francis has died today - I revisted his novels that I own.
Enquiry is by far the most gripping in my opinion. Being born in the same year of the book's first publication, I like to think a lot of good things happened in 1969!
Admittedly the book is centrally placed in the world of racing - this time with a jockey fighting to salvage his reputation against the hallowed authorities. The real pull for me is the sub story of Hughes relationship with Roberta. The author charts a relationship that starts on rocky ground and then over the course of the novel becomes something else(no spoilers here!). The fact that I always get caught up in that facet of the story ever time I read it is testament to his writing skill.

When publishers repackage a book with a new cover and you don't realise you've already read it until you turn the first page?
Ah well, my fault I guess. Dick Francis writes a great novel, generally with a racing background, and this is one of his earlier works. Easy to read, and great fun.
