By ACB (swansea) TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I have only recently heard this man James Blake. It takes a while to gather his own stylistic playing and singing. His delivery of a song is individualistic. Fragile, almost broken delivery with the pauses and pitch may irritate some listeners but stick with it as this performer is something special. As other reviewers have said, Joni Mitchell's personal 'A Case of You' is something you do not take on unless supremely confident. In a similar vein, not many would take on a Roy Orbison song. The Joni number jumps out in a familiar but completely different arrangement and delivery. It certainly won my vote. Makes it by a mile. The completion of this short album is no less appealing. 'Enough Thunder' is basic vocal and piano delivered with emotion. 'We Might Feel Unsound','Not Long now','We Might Feel Unsound' increase the impression that we have an impact talent. His fusion with Antony Hegarty on 'Once We Agree' and Ben Iver on 'Full Greek Boys Choir' are plus factors without detracting from the lead. The de-luxe version (2CD) contains these songs and is worth the listen. This stands alone, however, as an introduction to a deliverer of his own musical style. 'Enough Thunder' hits with a distinct impact. Highly recommended and please give a listen. Interesting to see how he musically develops.

Mr Blake's Best 13 Nov 2011
By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I listened to James Blake's eponymous debut and liked it; liked it but
didn't love it. I remain unsure what exactly prevented me from connecting
more strongly with it than I was able. It was certainly distinctive in its own
way but lacked that difficult-to-pin-down emotional substance which makes
a good album really great. A tad too cerebral for its own good perhaps?

This six track release originally appeared as an adjunct to the 'Deluxe
Edition' but appears here standing on its own two feet to be judged alone.
Everything I failed to have grasped in its big brother I seem to have
found here. It is a wonderfully strange and affecting confection full of
elusive soul and emotion of a far more rough-and-ready kind. That's the
difference I think; the music stakes its territory in the listening world
without too much twiddling and teasing of its structural and melodic elements.
Mr Blake's distinctive voice, too, is allowed room to breathe. The cut-and-
paste electronic treatments are kept to a minimum which reveals more clearly
what a fine voice it truly is; a tad otherworldly but curiously affecting.
Even when the mechanical storm clouds gather, as they do on the haunting
'We Might Feel Unsound', Mr Blake's voice maintains a steady stance at the
heart of the maelstrom. Opening track 'Once We All Agree', too, finds him
in fine fettle weaving a fragile but evocative line in and around the sparse
chords of the brooding arrangement (his vocal kinship with Antony Hegarty is
a blessing rather than a hindrance). It's a brave man who'd take on Joni
Mitchell and live to tell the tale but he makes a stunningly brave job of
it with his rendition of 'A Case Of You' (and trust me I'd have been the
first in line to cheer-on his beheading if he'd fluffed it!) It's really wonderful.
The collaboration with Bon Iver on 'Fall Creek Boys Choir' yields some truly
marvellous strange moments among the complex harmonic twists and turns but it
is the simply beautiful 'Not Long Now' to which I must fully raise my crooked hat.
It is an extraordinary song; ephemeral and struggling for shape and form within
a mist of half-heard ghostly voices and dark shuddering beats. A composition
which comes and goes like a dream leaving curious traces in our waking memory.

Final track 'Enough Thunder' needs no more than a piano and Mr Blake's subdued
but gorgeously elegant vocal performance to convince us of his true worth.

This gem is far more than a second thought. It is Mr Blake's best work by a mile.

Highly Recommended.

Nice mini-album/companion to the debut album 16 Nov 2011
By Paul Allaer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
James Blake seemingly came out of nowhere in 2010 with a couple of vinyl EP releases that quickly created a sizable buzz and eventually lead to the release of his debut album earlier this year. Now only 6 months later already comes a new release.

"Enough Thunder" (6 tracks; 26 min.) continues the electronic minimalist sound of earlier releases, and to great effect. The opening track "Once We All Agree" is the first of several piano-based tracks on here (albeit with plenty other stranger sounds). "We Might Feel Unsound" is probably my favorite track on here, entirely electronic, and with interesting underlying pulses. "Fall Creek Buys Choir" is a new track co-written and co-performed with Justin Vernin (a/k/a Bon Iver), and I'm quite sure you've never heard Bon Iver like this, it's yet miles further away than their recent self-titled is from "For Emma"). As is the custom for James Blake, he includes a cover on this release as well, namely Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You" (from her "Blue" album"), but Blake transposes the singer/guitar setting to a singer/piano setting. Other than changing it from guitar to piano, it is a surprisingly straight take on the song, and not my favorite moment on this release (this track was originally recorded for a BBC 1 show earlier this year). "Not Long Now" is probably the most "traditional", as in: electronic/chill sounding track on here. This release concludes with the title track, and again is just Blake and his piano.

In all, I quite like this release (don't call it an "EP", as it's only 12 min. shorter than the album released earlier this year, how about a "mini-album?), even though it is not quite as strong as the debut album, which surely will end up high on my "Albums of the Year" list. Blake has done some sporadic touring of the US this year, but unfortunately I did not get a chance to see him live. Can't wait for that opportunity at some point. Meanwhile "Enough Thunder" is a good addition to/companion to the stellar debut album from earlier this year. Looking forward to what James Blake will bring us next.

Hitting his stride 6 Nov 2011
By D - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
James Blake's excellent cover of "A Case of You" is easily my favorite of any of his songs that I've heard, and a couple other tracks on this EP (especially "Enough Thunder") are nearly as great as that song. I love this quiet, piano-driven style and traditional lyrical framing much, much better than the beats and repetitive lyrics of his self-titled album. I enjoy that album too, but I think its best tracks are the ones that are similar in style to the ones on this EP. I hope he makes a full length album that sounds like this. It's slow burning music to be listened to at night with the lights out, to be sure, but as far as I'm concerned that's not a bad thing at all.

Continued Greatness 16 Oct 2011
By amorfortuna2 - Published on Amazon.com
James Blake picked up where his self-titled album left off. This album is patient with many repetitions and subtle surprises. It takes a few listens to realize he is still experimenting and that this album goes even further than his last towards a new musical direction. His singing and the production of his vocals are even better than his last. There are no real pop tracks on this album, but it's subtle innovation keep it interesting for multiple listens. Again, his lyrics don't really stand out- most of the time I'm not sure what he's saying, but they are adequate enough to capture a mood. He also covers a female vocalist again and seems to excel at it-this time with joni mitchell's 'A Case of You'.
