SACD is said to be a "dying format" that "has not caught on". However, I have one or two SACDs that show what the format is capable of - this is one of them. If you compare the sound on the CD layer with the SACD sound, the latter seems to "unveil" the music - it just seems much more alive and closer to the sound of a real orchestra. Of course, indistinguishability from live performance has been the unachieved and unachievable goal of high fidelity sound reproduction since the horn gramophone era, but we're definitely a step closer here.

The finest sound reproduction would be pretty pointless if this wasn't a cracking performance, but it is. I always thought Yehudi Menuhin an underrated conductor, particularly of Elgar, with whom he seemed to have a particular affinity. This is most immediately apparent in his 1932 recording of the Elgar violin concerto with the composer conducting the LSO - a truly wonderful recording which is, happily, still available.

As a conductor in later life, Menuhin produced fine recorded performances of the first and second symphonies of Elgar. I saw him conduct a performance of the first Elgar symphony and urged him to record it, which he later did, although the recording was not quite as good as I remembered at the live concert. However, I think this performance of the Enigma Variations really quite outstanding - maybe not quite up to the Barbirolli recording of 1962, but superior sound quality might tip the balance in favour of this version.

If you have an SACD player and like the Enigma Variations then this is a really excellent buy.

This recording used to be available from Royal Philharmonic Collection budget CD, but there's nothing cheap about the performance and the recording quality. In fact, the digital recording was amazingly realistic and wide in dynamic range. Now this is available as hybrid SACD with stunning presence.

Royal PO's performance is outstanding in many ways. Menuhin has deep understanding of Elgar's music and its innermost yearning. Every movement displays his genuine affinity with the inspiration and characterisation of the music. Tempi are perfectly judged throughout, the famous 9th variation Nimrod, for example, is neither too fast nor too slow, achieving maximum grandeur and dramatic effect without losing forward momentum. The fast variations are bursting with energy and verve, the slow variations are played with amazing subtlely and heart warming intimacy. The additional organ in the last variation amplifies the scale of the monumental finale.

I had high hopes for this disk, I only ever buy SACD's and I have a lot, all classical. I also have quite a lot of Menuhin on LP records. I read the other two reviews and found them encouraging. However when I received and then played the disk I thought my Hi Hi system was actually faulty. I checked the system with other standard SACD's and my Hi Fi was fine. This SACD is unplayable. Its audio spectral balance is completely skewed towards the high frequency end of the audio spectrum, with low frequencies seriously attenuated. I applied as much treble CUT as I could at 15dB per octave and even this was inadequate. I did this by digging out a unused parametric equaliser. I wrote to the producers of this disk but received nothing. The rating is one star because the review system does not accept NO star.

Sound is distorted. Microphone level was too high...
Or, levels were higher in Audio mixing (Mix down).
Recording failure, but excellent performance.
