Amazon.co.uk Review

Dangerous Discovery is an interactive adventure inspired by the ever-popular Famous Five Books and is part of a range of CD-ROMs that bring the classic tales to a whole new generation (other titles include Silver Tower, Kidnapped and Treasure Island). The Famous Five are again at Kirrin Cottage during the summer holidays and get very excited when they discover an archaeological dig is taking place on the island. Inevitably they are soon involved in mystery, intrigue and strange goings on when archaeologist Mr Brown, an old acquaintance of Uncle Quentin’s, disappears unexpectedly. Julian, Dick, George, Anne and the irrepressible dog, Timmy, are soon on the case but you must help them in their search for the truth.

Players can listen to the story or follow the words--this is an interactive storybook at its best as well as a thrilling adventure game. The opening minutes set the scene, giving players clues and helpful hints along the way so that not only do they get involved in the story but they can also start thinking about solving the puzzles. The dialogue can be quite long in places but there is plenty to do to keep a player interested. As the mystery progresses gameplay becomes quite complex: clues and objects are not always obvious and young players will require persistence and inspiration to solve the toughest challenges. Help is at hand both in the full-colour instruction book included and in the "Helpful Hints" file included on the disc (which, when all else fails, also includes a "Solution"). The installation process is simple and is adequately explained in the accompanying information booklet.

The manufacturer's recommended age is 8-12--which seems accurate--but younger players may need assistance as well as persistence as the game is not always easy. (Handy tip: only the tip of the cursor is used when combining things together or using things. Forgetting this can lead to confusion.) Dangerous Discovery is a thought-provoking, challenging game that will improve powers of deduction, computer operation and memory skills while helping with reading and creativity. --SusanNaylor

My 7 year old daughter thought this was great and when she solved the puzzles she was thrilled. The clues helped her just enough to work it out 'by herself'. Perhaps this would be too linear for the older age range of the product but for her its brilliant. Will buy the others in the range.
