You might think Fricker would be Dr Evil's favourite composer; an expectation apparently fulfilled by his tuneless, pointless music here. RVW gets top billing, but his sonata is a late work palpably lacking in inspiration.
So, disc 2 is a bit of a wash-out. Disc 1, pre-war rather than post-war, provides more of the lyricism which the cover and perhaps title would lead you to expect, without furnishing anything really out of the ordinary.
The recordings, '94 and '95, are more recent than some in this series, the sound quality decent; and with total running time over 150 minutes (seven complete sonatas), you at any rate get plenty of aural wallpaper for the money. Although I bought it significantly cheaper even than it is here.
