I had this book once, and lent it, never to see it again. I mourned like a lost pet. Recently I came across it in a second-hand emporium and browsed through it cover-to-cover, with mixed feelings. It was like meeting again a long-lost love, wondering if the spark was still there. It was, but not quite enough that day for me to part with the amount it now costs. If you have a practical interest, or even just an amateur's enthusiasm, it is really worth every penny. I may yet give in and buy it again.

At the same time scholarly and accessible, this book takes the reader through a huge range of real ancient houses, built of every kind of material in every part of England. The only thing they have in common is that they are "vernacular"; designed by the skilled builder, not the architect. There are construction diagrams, plans, cutaways, and detailed descriptions. Timber buildings are particularly well described and discussed; once you have read this you will have a clear idea of the construction and evolution of the English timber house. The authors make it easy throughout to understand how one type of house evolves into another; the logic of the construction, the working of the builder's mind and the requirements of the people who had them built.

In addition there are a lot of photographs; every type of house described is abundantly illustrated. Many of the photos show buildings in the process of demolition, or removal; thus one is able to see details of the construction hidden since the house was built. The photos are grouped in sections of "plates", necessitating that irritating flicking backwards and forwards, but this book predates the modern printing technology which makes it easy to embed photos in the text.

This book is long out of print, but there must be a case for English Heritage updating and re-issuing something similar. It is a treasure-trove of accurate, detailed illustrations and technical drawings, and as far as I can see is only rivaled by Vernacular Architecture: An Illustrated Handbook (also a must for anyone interested in this topic). Although you are likely to have to settle for a used copy it is still worth acquiring - it's not as if the information contained inside is likely to go out of date.

A bit dated now, but nevertheless a work-of-art as a book, lots of beautiful b and w photos. Donlt trust the fine detail of some of he descriptions though...
