Trevelyan's book on English social history is a classic for everybody who might want to trace the background and development of the industrial revolution in England. I first read it in the 1970's as part of a university course on Social & Economic History. Now I'm about to use (parts of) it on my own course on the same subject. My old copy purchased in 1975 is worn out!

The language is fluent and amusing, although slightly "flowery" for modern taste. It's more like reading a (longish) novel than a scientific essay. However, if that will give students a general idea of where our industrialist society came from, all's well.
