Product Description

CD Description

This amazing album, originally released in 1964, was put together as an overview of the folk ballad in Britain, the cornerstone of what we collectively think of as folk music. The original album was expanded on its original CD release in 1996 with seven extra tracks by such wonderful singers as Anne Briggs, Mike Waterson and Louis Killen. The great folk ballads are here in definitive renditions. A.L.Loyd writes detailed notes placing the folk ballad in context, along with a history of each of the 18 songs. “The folk ballad is a folk tale put into verse and set to music. Among British ballads are some of the oldest as well as the greatest folk songs we have.” – from the sleeve notes by A.L. Lloyd. Tracks: Henry Martin - A.L. Lloyd / The Baron Of Brackley - Ewan MacColl / Reynardine - Anne Briggs / The Bramble Briar - Louis Killen / Jack Orion - A.L. Lloyd / The Cruel Ship's Carpenter - Mike Waterson / The Cruel Mother - A.L. Lloyd / Lord Randal - Ewan MacColl / The Bitter Withy - A.L. Lloyd / The Forester - Norman Kennedy / Willie O Winsbury - Anne Briggs / The Sweet Kumadie - Ewan MacColl / The Demon Lover - A.L. Lloyd / Young Edwin In The Lowlands - Louis Killen / Hughie The Graeme - Ewan MacColl / Drumdelgie - Norman Kennedy / The Prickly Bush - A.L. Loyd / The Beggar Man - Ewan MacColl.

Folk ballads 21 Jan 2011
By Ms. M. Potter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This recording is an excellent variety of folk ballads from England and Scotland. The selection of songs on this recording show the wonderful poetry of British Ballads.
And it is possible through these tales and stories to gain a flavour of the ordinary people and their lives throughout the ages.
The stories are of family loyalties, moralising symbology, pride, love, farming, feuding, raiding, jealousy and all sorts of elements of ordinary life.
Some Ballads are genial peasant improvisations on religious legends, such as "the bitter withy". Others are adventures or romances, such as "demon lover". And others deal with crime and tragedies such as "Hughie the Graeme and the baron of Brackley".
This is a fantastic disc that collects together some remarkable songs of British heritage. And these are performed by some important figures from the world of folk song performers. We get A. L. Lloyd, Ewan MacColl, Ann Briggs, Louis Killen, Mike Waterson and Norman Kennedy. And each track is pure magic.
This album is a traditionalist album with some great performances of English and Scottish traditional folk songs. The sound recording is excellent despite the fact that the tracks date from the early 1960s. It is a great album and a great concept that is an essential addition to the collection of folk recordings.

Interesting, though not always melodic... 13 Jun 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I love traditional music and would recommend this album to anybody who feels the same way. The songs all tell stories and compel you to listen again. This is an album that really grows on you.

Although I admire A.L. Lloyd (AKA Al Lloyd, AKA Bert Lloyd) as a song collector, he left much to be desired as a singer. Traditional music demands good intonation, which was something Lloyd simply did not have. Some of his renditions on this album and others are so dreadfully off-key as to be nearly painful. But aside from this poor choice of singer, it's an interesting album.
