A tribute to the mute witnesses to the shaping of a nation,
This review is from: English Ruins (Hardcover)
The English landscape is steeped in ruins. For architectural historian Jeremy Musson, ruins "speak of the rising and falling of dynasties, of the power of the Church, of the tides of industry and war -- of the mutability of human experience". He visits abandoned castles and tumbledown country houses, derelict industrial buildings and boarded-up terraces, and reveals the often surprising history of some of England's most intriguing ruins, and explores their relationship with their surroundings. These mute witnesses to the shaping of a nation are beautifully captured by the lens of Paul Barker.

A wondrous full color photography book for anyone with a love of history and architecture,
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: English Ruins (Hardcover)
England's history is long and ancient, and its remnants are there to see for anyone who seeks them. "English Ruins" is a blend of photography, history, and travel, as Jeremy Musson and photographer Paul Barker guide readers through the remnants of England's history that are spread throughout its countryside. Musson discusses the abandoned abbeys, castles, industrial ruins and much more, discussing their purpose in their prime and what has become of them. With a certain plea calling for a restoration movement, "English Ruins" is a wondrous full color photography book for anyone with a love of history and architecture.
