Product Description

Review

"The book under review by John Walter takes issue with the conventional view of these riots and provides a higly sophisticated, deeply researched and subtle alternative approach. The author provides a four-tiered analysis of his subject and in doing so makes a major contribution to our understanding of the origins and nature of the English Civil War...Dr. Walter then provides a penetrating analysis of the crowds themselves, focusing first on the fact that included among the victims in 1642 were a number of clergymen notably in Colchester and some other towns, who had been presented to their livings by gentry sympathetic to the Laudian church.."

Product Description

The English Civil Wars explores the period of turmoil in British history from 1637 and the latter part of the reign of Charles I, to the restoration with Charles II in 1660. The religious and political crises surrounding the Civil Wars, and the key personalities of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell are discussed in detail. The book combines narrative, interpretations, source material, questions and worked answers.

The Great Seel. 15 Aug 2006
Format:Paperback
It has been mentioned in previous reviews that this book is a necessity for attaining an A grade at a-level. True. What has not been mentioned is that this, along with the great "Regicide and Republic," will also get you a middling 2:1 from Oxford whilst being perfectly suitable toilet reading for the lay historian. All that remains is for the great Seel to produce some more superb material and achieve the coveted 6 out of 5 stars along with a smiley face... perhaps an autobiography?

As a student of Graham Seel at the Manchester Grammar School I was fortunate enough to be able to follow the evolution of this book chapter by chapter. The A-level Stuart History course is suberbly dealt with by this book, which provides concise and expert synopses of the various topics, accompanied by sample questions. Buy it.

This book, part of an excellent series from the Routledge publishing house, is a great help for any A-level history candidate, especially those aspiring to attain a top grade. It is intelligently, sophisticatedly, and lucidly written in a manner which if successfully emulated will serve to improve essay technique and if simply read will greatly improve knowledge and understanding of the period. This book consists of narrative, interpretations, source material, questions and worked answers and hence serves as a complete study guide in itself. Graham Seel, intelligently and expertly manipulating first-hand sources as well as considering those of established historians, whilst using expert brevity, manages to simplify (although not dumb-down) one of the most sophisticated periods of history. With ample illustrations and direct source quotes, Seel has produced a masterpiece of Stuart history study in an efficient and concise style, helping the student reader learn to analyse the period intelligently. I have now read this book several times and am still learning from Seel's skilfull technique and mastery of the period. I VERY strongly reccomend the purchase of this book to any student.
