Abandoning the traditional narrative approach to its subject, this book presents an analytical account which aims to reflect the logic of the conditions, events, and policies of Henry's brief Reformation. It starts with the fundamental question of the royal supremacy, and goes on to investigate its application to the ecclesiastical establishment of England and to the traditional religion of the people. It then considers the initial formation of a vernacular and literate religious culture, and concludes by examining the emergence of religious division in Henry's reign.

About the Author
RICHARD REX is Senior Lecturer in Church History in the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge, and is Director of Studies in History at Queens' College, Cambridge, UK. He has published widely on late medieval and Tudor Church history and his previous publications include The Lollards (Palgrave Macmillan, 2002).

Being an A-Level history student studying the Reformation it was essential for me to find a clealry structured book. Providing a different approach, Rex examines each of the reasons for the Refomation in turn but not with the traditional narrative approach. In recent years ideas for the causes of the Reformation have changed and Rex takes these into consideration. I would throughly recommend the book and have found it invaluable for my studies.
