CD Description
The recorder has been part of Western music for more than seven hundred years, during which time it has enjoyed a particularly special relationship with the composers and musicians of England. The present recording showcases the music of three generations of English composers who have embraced the recorder, making significant contributions to the repertoire in the process. Gordon Jacob, the eldest, composed numerous works for the recorder from the 1950s up until his last year. Sir Malcolm Arnold was to follow Jacobs example contributing his Concerto for Recorder, originally written for and premiered by Michala Petri. Arnolds amphibious existence as a composer for both film and the concert hall is echoed in the career of our youngest contributor, the BAFTA award-winning composer and recorder player Richard Harvey. The result? Pure musical enchantment! Jacob's delightful Suite has been a mainstay for recorder players (and an audience favourite) since its premiere, while Arnold's rarely performed concerto is a late masterwork truly deserving a wider audience makes a most welcome return to the catalogue. The program is capped off by Harvey's magical Concerto Incantato (composed especially for Michala) - a true concert piece for the Harry Potter generation.

This was recommended by a friend who was trying to convince me that the recorder - which I remembered with horror from school - was a serious musical instrument. Case proved. In Michala Petri's hands, it's a revelation. The Richard Harvey Recorder Concerto, premiered here, is amazing. The CD notes talk about a concerto for the Harry Potter generation and this would make fantastic music for one last film, if JK Rowling ever changes her mind.

Mesmerising, soothing, and beautiful. Three words one would not usually associate with the sounds of the recorder. However, upon listening to the Richard Harvey Recorder Concerto, my opinion was changed immediately. The attention to detail is evident, and the execution of Michala Petri's performance is exquisite. Truly a gratifying listen and not one to miss out on.

Vibrant playing from Petri of a solo part which shows not only how much Richard Harvey knows about the recorder, being an excellent player himself, but how much he knows about the colours the orchestra can give us. There are nods to the Medieval, Mendelssohn, Respighi, Harry Potter... and I particular enjoyed the middle movement, the Danza. Don't be too close to the speaker when Petri hits the high last note of the final cascade!

Most wonderful!
this is so huge in my estimation, you'd never find a landscape large enough to contain it...really enjoyable and holds the interest very well with all it's windings and journeying.
