Leo Goosens is one of those seminal figures in the recent times for the prominence of the oboe as a virtuoso instrument.
This is colleciton of works composed for him, as well as another landmark oboist of England, Rothwell.
It is performed most admirably by a rising British oboist, Ruth Bolister who in fact played a performace for Princess Diana. She has a solid sound, somewhat darker than American oboists, but refreshing to hear nonetheless. Her phrasing and attacks are powerful.
The compositions by Jacob, Elgar, Holst (composed while at UofM Ann Arbor), Eugene Goosens, and Ralph Vaughan Williams are united in their showing off the skills of the oboe, tightly supported yb the Elgar Chamber Orchestra under conductor Stephen Bell.
The Jacob piece was new to me, but I enjoy its pastoral setting and charmful lyricism.
