Summerly's stated aim in presenting such a wide ranging survey of English secular music, is to show the continuity between the Elizabethans and the Victorian tradition. Which it does. Despite the absence of the real "big names" - Byrd, Dowland, Purcell, Britten - I'd think that for most listeners though this CD would be a good sampler to give a taste for where to go next. Texts are included.

Well I confess I bought this solely for the performance of Stanford's sublime "Bluebird", which as performed here is as magical and sublime as you could imagine. Having indulged myself with that, the rest of the disc is pretty good too. Some gems, like Lay a Garland, and Thule the period of cosmography, sit alongside some pot-boilers like Fair Phillis, but it's all sung well and at the Naxos price point there really isn't anything not to like.

A very pleasant tour through early music history 23 Nov 2004
By Timothy J. Ridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
From King Henry through the early 18th century, the best vocal music of the times. I was so taken by the earliest material that my a capella group learned several of the pieces and have performed them in many venues over the years.

If you like the sound of early music, this is a must-have.

Beautiful Choral singing 19 Dec 2012
By Donald G. Barnhouse - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The repertoire on this disc is unusual, and lovely. The singing is masterful. The effect of listening to the music is a combination of musical excitement and emotional calm. If you are in a singing group, recommend some of these to your director. If not, join one as soon as you are able.
