Product Description

Product Description

Anyone with a desire to learn more about English Literature can find it difficult to know where to start, but here is the perfect solution.

David Rothwell’s book is an idiosyncratic and light-hearted review of all that is great (and not so great) about the major figures of English Literature, and provides lucid and entertaining explanations of every literary form and technique. Free of pointless biographical detail, it concentrates on providing examples of prose and poetry that help to understand the essence of the work.

With their total lack of any pretence of neutrality, you may not always agree with David Rothwell’s views, but you can hardly fail to be informed and entertained by them.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential for your bookshelf, 4 July 2010
This review is from: A to Z of English Literature (Reference) (Wordsworth Reference) (Paperback)
What a refreshing change.
A book about English Literature that does not simply regurgitate other people's work or follow slavishly the opinions of earlier commentators and writers.
Any reference book that defines 'poets' as 'Misguided beings who write poetry' - and develops that no further - and at the same time gives the best short analysis of the sonnet ever written - is a must for the bookshelf of any student of the English language and its literature. Irreverent, opinionated and articulate, David Rothwell may ruffle a few pompous feathers in the academic world - but the emperors' lack of clothing is rather pithily depicted on many occasions. Buy the book immediately, and don't fail to look up 'Martin Amis' and 'autobiography'. In the context of the accuracy of those definitions - how can you question anything else?

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem!, 29 Jun 2010
This review is from: A to Z of English Literature (Reference) (Wordsworth Reference) (Paperback)
If you expect a reference book to be dull then you should read this amusing and fascinating book! It is very informative and very amusingly written by David Rothwell. He obviously loves literature, knows his stuff, and is insightful and funny in writing about it. Buy it for anyone who is studying English Literature and for anyone who doesn't know where to start, but would like to know more. And anyone else with any interest however small in learning about literature. You would find it hard not to be interested and entertained by this book.
