About the Author

Bob Jackman is an expert Scrabble player, having won the Australian National Championships in 1993 and 2003, and represented Australia five times at the World Scrabble Championships, most recently in Mumbai, India in 2007. He is a cofounder of of the Trans-Tasman Challenge, a biannual event pitting the best of Australia against the best of New Zealand, and won that inaugural event in 1996. Through his SOWPODS website, he has been instrumental in promoting International Scrabble and assisted countries such as South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Nigeria and Malta in establishing local ratings systems. He is an active member of both the ratings and tournament committees of the World English Scrabble Players Association, and has maintained the International Scrabble ratings system since its inception in 1993. Prior to compiling the English Language Word Builder, he published a series of booklets of three to nine letter words, complete with definitions of key words. These publications provided the basis for his latest work. In Australia he has been head of Scrabble New South Wales since 1991, and steered its growth from six to over fifty affiliated Scrabble clubs. He has been instrumental in establishing a School Scrabble network in the State, promoting Scrabble as both a means of improving literacy and numeracy skills and a competitive game of enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars extraordinary word lists 28 Sep 2009
By Ivor E. Zetler - Published on Amazon.com
This unusual book is primarily targeted towards word lovers. This would include dedicated Scrabble players, those with a fascination of the complexities of the English language and people wanting to refine their language knowledge.

Essentially what is to be found in Jackman's "Word Builder" is a succession of word lists. The following is a random example of the type of lists to be found, with a few interesting examples interpolated: Five Letter Words 1)Adjectives ending in 'Y'(bousy, manky, spiry), 2) Others containing heavy letters; nouns containing letter J (ajwan, mujik, slojd, wilja), nouns with letter Q (maqui, umaiq, usque), nouns containing X (jaxie, texas, wuxia), nouns with Z (ghazi, mazut, ziram) etc, etc.

The words are sourced from the Collins and Webster dictionaries. The lists cover words from two to nine letters. No meanings are supplied; just lists coming in a wide variety of permutations. Symbols indicate if a word is an adjective, verb and so forth. The lists are clearly presented, though some concentration is required to work out the meaning of the symbols.

Robert Jackman is a distinguished Scrabble player, he has twice been the Australian Scrabble Champion. I can claim the honor of having beaten him on a number of occasions!

If you are an English language freak, or have aspirations of becoming one, this is the book for you.
