Synopsis

From the remnants of tales found in Old English verse, the author has pieced together some of the heroic legends known to the English over 1000 years ago. This work is about the heroic legends the English brought with them from what is now northern Germany when they first invaded Britain. After the foreword the book is divided into two parts: Part A contains six Old English stories and Part B, entitled 'The Source Material', gives interesting information about the origins and development of each story. Everything has been meticulously researched by the author, Kathleen Herbert, who has a very readable writing style, besides which she is an Old English language expert.

The Anglo-Saxon invaders of Britain came from three main regions: the Jutes from what is now the Danish mainland still known as 'Jutland', the English or Angels from what is now known as Schleswig-Holstein and the Saxons from Saxony. The Danes, who eventually gave their name to Jutland and its neighbouring islands (Denmark) originated in southern Sweden. The Jutes settled in what are now known as Kent and the Isle of White, the English or Angels settled in what are now SE Scotland, NE England, the East Midlands and East Anglia and the Saxons settled in Essex, Sussex, the SW of England and the West Midlands. These stories originated with the English or Angles.

All the stories, retold in modern English, are very enjoyable to read, besides which they give interesting insights into the lifestyles of the Anglo-Saxons. Besides the male heroes there are some powerful women characters, strongly suggesting that women in those days were freer than they were during the Middle Ages. Here we have the seeds of the genius that was eventually to blossom out in the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare and many other great English language writers and poets. This is a real gem of a book that no one interested in English origins should ever be without.

I have started studying things Anglo Saxon, in conjunction with Norse mythology. This is a great story book, never mind a great insight into Anglo Saxon legends.

To prove how good it is I am about to start reading it for the 5th time - I seriously enjoy it.

An interesting read of stories from the birth of the English nation.
If like me you are an English person re-discovering an English identity and history denied us in our schools and media then this book is for you.
This book is worth the cost purely for the story 'Alone at monster gate' which tells of the greatest Angle (English) king of his time, Offa of Angeln.

If you have any interest in Anglo-Saxon England, read this book.

A nice blend of story-telling and scholarship, this is a nice addition to your library. Not interested in the scholarship? You can skip the second part of the book, and just enjoy the stories. But don't.
