Product Description

Book Description

A friendly and informative guide designed to help visitors make the most of their time in the sunny Vendee - a popular area of France's Atlantic coast. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Author

What makes this book a "bible" for Vendee visitors?
I hope this guidebook will enhance your experience of the Vendee - whether you are a first-time holiday visitor or are lucky enough to spend longer each year in this delightfully relaxed part of western France.

But first of all, a word to the Scots, Irish, Welsh - and to any anglophones from farther afield... The subtitle of the book ("An English Family Guide") is not designed to annoy you! The word "English" merely refers to the language in which the guide is written. The Vendean publisher is compelled to include it at the insistence of bookshops that sell it in the Vendee.

I actually wrote the guide almost for myself, as a way of pulling together all the odd bits of knowledge gleaned over 30 years' holiday-home-ownership! I was tired of rummaging through endless leaflets to find opening hours and phone numbers of attractions, and of being unable to locate the most obscure (but often the most interesting) sights, tucked away down winding backroads. I also yearned to understand the destructive post-Revolutionary Vendee Wars, and to be able to put my hand easily on such vital facts as how long to cook crabs or langoustines. So all this information, and more, lies within its covers.

To help you find an outing not too far from the place you are staying, I have divided this large French county into six sections. And in this new edition I have included phone and fax numbers of tourist offices (in case you need information in advance of your holiday), a schedule of market days (so you can easily find one nearby for a particular morning) and - in view of today's concerns about food production - information on shops' labelling of food that would correspond to "organic" in Britain.

Judging by the wonderful comments I have received in person and by e-mail since the first edition appeared, the book has become the "bible" for most English-speaking people visiting the area. I trust you will find something for everybody in its pages - whether you are golfers or culture hounds, foodies or fishing fantatics, or parents of toddlers or teenagers.

And I hope you find it as useful as I do myself !

5.0 out of 5 stars wouldn't visit the Vendee without it, 17 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: English Family Guide to the Vendee and Surrounding Area (Paperback)
Our copy of this book becomes ever more battered as we take it (or it takes us) round the Vendee time and again. Small and light enough to carry with you, it details everything - from themeparks , museums and the smartest resorts to oyster beds, break-of-dawn canoe trips and particularly eccentric cafes. Not only that, it tells you when, how much, and what you will see on the way. Breathtakingly spectacular, bizarre or charming, if it is in the Vendee, it is in this book.
Clear, concise , easy to use and easy to read. With lots of background and practical information, I can hardly imagine visiting the Vendee without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Vendee, 15 Aug 2002

MRS J E CLAYTON (Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: English Family Guide to the Vendee and Surrounding Area (Paperback)
This was an excellent book to take on holiday. The information was second to none. Angela Bird has certainly done her homework. Before we left England the kids had read it and written a list of where they wanted to visit. When we got there, we then shortlisted them and armed with the book, set out and had a really good time. For anyone visitng the Vendee this book is a must, definately not boring and quite humerous in places. The family in the caravan next to us were going to buy a copy when they went back home. As it was, there were 6 families looking at it in an evening and writing down instuctions so that they could visit they day after.
Well done Angela and thankyou.
