Book Description

9 Jan 2008
Book Description:

"A fairy tale or fairy story is a fictional story that usually features folkloric characters (such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, witches, giants, and talking animals) and enchantments, often involving a far-fetched sequence of events. In modern-day parlance, the term is also used to describe to something blessed with unusual happiness, as in "fairy tale ending" (a happy ending) or "fairy tale romance", though not all fairy tales end happily. Colloquially, a "fairy tale" or "fairy story" can also mean any far-fetched story.

In cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, fairy tales may merge into legendary narratives, where the context is perceived by teller and hearers as having historical actuality. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, persons, and events; they take place "once upon a time" rather than in actual times.

The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace, because only the literary forms can survive. Still, the evidence of literary works at least indicates that fairy tales have existed for thousands of years, although not perhaps recognized as a genre; the name "fairy tale" was first ascribed to them by Madame d'Aulnoy. Literary fairy tales are found over the centuries throughout the world, and when folklorists collected them, they found fairy tales in every culture. Fairy tales, and works derived from fairy tales, are still written today.

The older fairy tales were intended for an audience of adults as well as children, but they were associated with children as early as the writings of the precieuses; the Brothers Grimm titled their collection Children's and Household Tales, and the link with children has only grown stronger with time." About the Author

About the Author:

"Jacobs was born at Sydney, the son of John and Sarah Jacobs. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and at the University of Sydney, where he won a scholarship for classics, mathematics and chemistry. He did not complete a course at Sydney, but left for England at the age of 18 and entered St John's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1876, and in 1877 studied at the University of Berlin. He was secretary of the Society of Hebrew Literature from 1878 to 1884, and in 1882 came into prominence as the writer of a series of articles in The Times on the persecution of the Jews in Russia. This led to the formation of the mansion house fund and committee, of which Jacobs was secretary from 1882 to 1900. During these years he gave much time to anthropological studies in connexion with the Jewish race, and became an authority on the question." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best fairy tale collections 19 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
This delightful collection of stories includes many of the best-known English folk and fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Tom Thumb, Dick Whittington, and The Three Bears. It also includes many lesser-known tales that are equally delightful. Some of my favourites are stories that feature adventurous and enterprising heroines, like Kate Crackernuts, Molly Whuppie, Cap o Rushes, Tamlane, and Mr Fox. The stories are narrated in a cheerful, simple style that make them very easy to read. My seven-year-old son absolutely loves the stories in this book (he is particularly fond of the preposterous story The Three Sillies, and the scary Mr Miacca). This collection should appeal to anyone with imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fairy Tales 3 July 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember this as a battered old book that had been passed down through the family and had got lost over time. I was delighted to find the story of The Hobbyahs again. I found the stories are excellent, but some stories may be a bit gruesome for younger readers, so best to read them first before reading them to them. Also beautiful illustrations for every story. Highly recommended.

I was given this book as a child and have since lost all trace of it, so I was glad to be able to buy a facsimile edition and give it to my grandson.
