Product Description

Product Description

One of the great nineteenth-century folklorists, Joseph Jacobs collected stories from oral sources and made scholarly notes on their origin, but he deliberately recorded them in a plain and direct style which he thought suitable for children and which makes them 'supremely tellable'. First published in 1890, his famous collection includes all the well-known tales, such as JACK AND THE BEANSTALK and DICK WHITTINGTON, as well as British variants of stories common to many cultures. The illustrations by John Batten are taken from the first edition.

About the Author

About the Author:

"Jacobs was born at Sydney, the son of John and Sarah Jacobs. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and at the University of Sydney, where he won a scholarship for classics, mathematics and chemistry. He did not complete a course at Sydney, but left for England at the age of 18 and entered St John's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1876, and in 1877 studied at the University of Berlin. He was secretary of the Society of Hebrew Literature from 1878 to 1884, and in 1882 came into prominence as the writer of a series of articles in The Times on the persecution of the Jews in Russia. This led to the formation of the mansion house fund and committee, of which Jacobs was secretary from 1882 to 1900. During these years he gave much time to anthropological studies in connexion with the Jewish race, and became an authority on the question." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

By L O'connor TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This delightful collection of stories includes many of the best-known English folk and fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Tom Thumb, Dick Whittington, and The Three Bears. It also includes many lesser-known tales that are equally delightful. Some of my favourites are stories that feature adventurous and enterprising heroines, like Kate Crackernuts, Molly Whuppie, Cap o Rushes, Tamlane, and Mr Fox. The stories are narrated in a cheerful, simple style that make them very easy to read. My seven-year-old son absolutely loves the stories in this book (he is particularly fond of the preposterous story The Three Sillies, and the scary Mr Miacca). This collection should appeal to anyone with imagination.

I was given this book as a child and have since lost all trace of it, so I was glad to be able to buy a facsimile edition and give it to my grandson.

A dreaming book 30 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a beautiful series of stories that makes you come back baby. There is heroism in the characters, in their continual choice to keep dreaming of and trying for a better way of life, there is also cunning, wiliness, intelligence, and many times the naivety that makes it a bit silly. I teach English to children in an Italian school and I found this book a valuable aid for my job.
