Book Description

1 Oct 2011
Jill Bray's target market is everyone who requires an easy-access study and reference book, e.g. those with inadequate basic English grammar and usage skills, including older school pupils, university/college students, some employees, website owners, internet marketers, etc. Teachers/lecturers will find it an invaluable teaching and revision aid (it includes before and after tests to monitor progress). It will help non-native speakers from Intermediate level upwards, and the general reader.

This refreshingly-different book for study, reference, and revision covers many aspects of English grammar, common errors, punctuation, spelling (including some foreign words and phrases, misspellings and abbreviations) style, literary terms, drafting, writing and proofreading. It is a compilation of 349 tips, with over 1,000 (often humorous) examples. Designed to fill the small or gaping gaps in the reader's knowledge, it provides an excellent foundation for progress in English skills.

Since the majority of documents are produced on a computer, this book offers tips on how to spellcheck, how to link sentences and paragraphs, and how to revise/polish documents until they are as effective as possible. These vital skills of drafting, writing and proofreading are stressed.

Review

"I could never imagine that one can enjoy going through points of grammar, choice of words, tips on style and other fine points of the English Language. The contents are humorous, exciting, fascinating, and even cliff-hanging in places! I can recommend English Essentials Explained for everybody: for students of the English Language, for anybody who would like to be sure of the proper use of words, for every webmaster who puts a website online, even for students of English as a Foreign Language. This is a must for everybody who writes anything in English."

"I had reached the age of 60 and still got confused about the apostrophe. Jill's pages on its uses sorted me out and yet did not make me feel small or inadequate - just badly taught all those years ago!"
Patti Singleton, Scotland

I've always known my English needed improvement, but had never found a book that explained simply what it was I needed to know in language easy to understand. I am thrilled to have found it in English Essentials Explained. What a terrific gift this book is for those who aspire to win essay contests, or just want the appreciation of their professors and instructors! Many thanks! --Konstanze-Marié Ahlers, Media Agentur Ahlers, Germany
