Product Description

Review

Clear contextualisation and easy to follow explanations make this a must for any English department. (Scott, Oliver, English Teacher - London)

An excellent resource for the NLS. I think the quotations from real books will help students to connect what goes on in dictionaries with their reading in the classroom. (Lindsay, Navahra, English Teacher - London)

5.0 out of 5 stars schoo; dictionary 29 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
I was unsure which dictionary to buy for a ten year old but I think I made the right choice. It is easy to understand yet advanced enough to last her into senior school. It is printed on top class paper which makes it a pleasure to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Age suitability 17 Mar 2010
By A. Atir
Format:Hardcover
I was not sure if this would be age appropriate before I recieved it. My daughter is 8 years old and it is just perfect for her. I should say that she is a good reader if your child is struggling I would suggest it would be slightly out of there grasp. There is a fantastic selection of words for 8+.
I found that there were not enough words in others that I looked at in a book store for this age group.
Perfect for looking up those words they do not understand in there homework reading books.
Very impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars School dictionary 26 July 2010
By H Woods
Format:Paperback
I bought 10 of these for a class of 7 and 8 year olds. Initially, they hadn't had much experience with using dictionaries. After a few days teaching and practice, they became reasonably proficient. These dictionaries are much better than the usual dictionaries that are found in classes for this age group due to the extensive word list, clear, easy to follow format and the use of examples to illustrate word usage. The language used is not too complex for them, although they do not always understand how to correctly use words they have found. Where an entry has more than one word class, eg verb and noun, this is made clear, eg contract. In conclusion, these are good value and can be used by children from 7-11 years and beyond.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why does it use American Spellings? 9 May 2012
Format:Paperback
The copy in the school where I am a volunteer reader, and the two versions on Amazon where you can 'Look inside' use the American 'z' suffix, not the British 's', e.g., 'acclimatize' for 'acclimatise'.
I wanted to buy the school a 'British' copy but don't know where to get one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dictionary for the next step 4 July 2010
By Fletch-a-sketch TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great little dictionary for secondary school children, a step up from the picture dictionaries of junior school, this nicely laid out dictionary is easy to use and visually good on the eye.
The key words are in blue making them stand out from the other text. There are also enough words for the average student to keep them busy story writing for some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource 6 July 2010
By Lovely Treez TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This dictionary is excellent for our 10 yr old son who has struggled with my Concise Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus. He can work independently and feels less frustrated as it is much more user friendly. An excellent resource for this age group especially with preparation for transfer exams and hopefully at secondary school also.
