Product Description

Product Description

There are few sights more evocative of England than a small village whose golden stone cottages are dwarfed by an embattled tower, or a great sweep of landscape from which an elegant spire soars above trees and meadows. This book is a celebration of English churches, which despite their basic arrangement of tower, nave, aisles and chancel are so varied in their architecture, regional styles, structural materials, personalities and settings that they present an endless feast, each one combining familiarity with surprise and pleasure. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

My copy is worn as much the churches in the book are. I lend it out and my friends are reluctant to give it back. One told me that it was better than going to church as far as she is concerned. The photography and choice of location is magnificent . Getting away from every day blahs is easy! Open this wonderful book and move about the country side.

Don't bother 14 Mar 2004

The same old churches that pop up in every other book, uninspired photography and not even a particularly good read. And it's geographically way too selective. English Country Churches? Forget that idea, there are whole counties you wouldn't know even existed if you used this as your guide.

Give it a miss and get Simon Jenkin's "England's Thousand Best Churches" instead, or indeed anything by John Betjeman or Alec Clifton-Taylor.

My Favourite Book - Ever 5 May 2000
By Matt Hood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is one of my favourite books of all time - I even own two copies as the first got damaged by constant use by me, my family AND my friends. It is a must for anyone who finds the aesthetically pleasing beautiful to behold. Page after page of sumptuous photography, quite excellently executed camerawork which brings to life the glorious buildings and their histories, accompanied by short snippets of tantalising information. Thanks to this book I've visited over half of the one hundred or so churches, many down obscure country lanes forgotten about by the busy world rushing by. No matter what one's religious views the sheer splendour of these buildings is heavenly.

Nice to look at & read 10 May 2011

Book is smaller than a coffee table book, so photos are not huge. Needs to have a glossary of church terms, esp. architecture. Also, map of UK would have been nice as well.
